After attending Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, he won a scholarship to study geology at Oxford.

Dr Cecil Madigan commenced an expedition across the Simpson Desert in 1929 by a Westland Wapiti aircraft that was supplied by the Royal Australian Air Force.
Madigan, along with a party of Scientists crossed the Simpson Desert in May 1939, 19 Camels carried all of their supplies from Andado to Birdsville.
The Madigan Line is marked on some maps, but is not a formed track and is seldom used.

Cecil Madigan was educated at Adelaide High School, then Prince Alfred College.
Madigan was fascinated with the Simpson Desert, and flew several reconnaissance flights over the area in 1929.It was this year that Madigan named the desert after Allen Simpson, the then President of the Royal Geographical Society in Adelaide, and a major financial backer of his work.
In 1939, Madigan mounted a very heavily equipped scientific expedition and crossed the Simpson Desert north of Colson’s route.

During the second year of occupation the party at the Main Base was reduced to seven: Bage, Madigan, Bickerton, Hodgeman and Mawson, together with S.N. Jeffryes, who relieved Hannam with wireless operations.
Mawson, Madigan and Hodgeman made a sledge trip in late November and on December 12 the AURORA returned.

This canyon when filled in the 1974 flood enabled John and Roma Dulhunty to bypass the Hunt Peninsula by boating from Madigan Gulf through the canyon and dragging their boat across the 50 metre gap to Jackboot Bay.

Jol, like many other people, had read the book, “Crossing the Dead Heart” by Cecil Madigan, with a view of one day seeing first hand the country that Madigan had described, during his 1939 scientific expedition of the Simpson Desert.
They were able to retrace their tracks from the previous year to as far as the Lake Caroline turn off, then continued on to Madigan’s Camp 15 and 16 and then out through Beachcomber Oil Well.
As far as European history goes, Madigan's Camp 16 Blaze tree would be the most important to see in the Hay River area.

Camelback explorers David Lindsay (1886), Edmund Colson (1936) and Cecil Madigan (1939) all chose to begin their confrontation with the Simpson Desert from the western side, as did the first man game to attack the desert by motor vehicle, Reg Sprigg, who headed east and gallivanted through with his family in 1962.
The oil exploring team Compagnie Generale de Geophysique (CGG) also mounted their heavy-vehicular charge from the west at Dalhousie in 1963 and left as a legacy their access road, the French Line, which has since so opened up the Simpson that the desert has become the classroom of scientists and the resort of adventuring 4WDrivers.
The motor truck had not yet been handed the baton for pioneers like Tom Kruse to run with from the roaring twenties on.
