 Cecilia Bartoli
Yet from song to song, it's hard not to love Bartoli's animation, even her excessive facial mobility.
Bartoli's a capable actress, but she'd rather show off her dexterity than her understanding; it was odd to hear her convey such delight in an aria about an emotional shipwreck.
Bartoli's coloratura was formidable for speed, agility, and accuracy, but not for variety of color or expressive range.

Saint Patrick's Church: Saints of November 22
Dryden wrote a "Song for Saint Cecilia Day" and Pope an "Ode for Music on Saint Cecilia Day."
First: "Cecilia, though wedded, according to Roman law, to a nobleman by the name of Valerian, is always listed as a virgin, as well as a martyr, because her husband respected her private vow to become the bride of Christ and never exercised his marital rights" (Keyes).
Under the high altar in Saint Cecilia's Church is a beautiful marble statue by Maderna portraying the "martyr" bathed in her own blood as she fell after the stroke of the sword.

classical music - andante - cecilia bartoli, early music diva?
Cecilia Bartoli (mezzo); Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin/Bernhard Forck (violin).
The opening number in Philadelphia was a feather-weight little verse song inviting nymphs and shepherds to disport themselves in the breezes; when Bartoli tried to put some extra energy behind it, her delivery took on a vehemence that seemed way beyond what the music called for (and beyond, I suspect, what she intended).
Bartoli was much more interesting in the French and Spanish texts of the works by Pauline Viardot (herself a great mezzo of the 19th century) and Georges Bizet — her comedic manner and storytelling skills served her especially well in "La Coccinelle," about a ladybug who teaches a young man a lesson in love.

 Saint Cecilia
Cecilia's whole life, as described by the legend, was a beautiful song offered to the divine source of her inspiration and love.
Cecilia was a patrician girl of Rome who was reared as a Christian, although her father appears to have been a pagan.
Saint Cecilia is one of the most popular saints in Christian art and devotion, but of the real person history gives only a hint.

Cook it Quick :: Com Que Voz
The title song, "What With a Voice" in a rough translation, was written presumably by Portugal's national symbol, Camões.
The music was composed by Amália's "private" composer, who chose only to write music for her voice, Alain Oulman, of French-Portuguese origin, whose melodies allowed for a greater extension and colloratura, adequate to all Amália could give and waiting for her total delivery.
Recorded at the top of her form, in 1969, everything is perfect about this recording: the arrangements, the words, the voice.

Sleeve Notes - Songs by Finzi and his friends
Finzi’s last work, the Cello Concerto, had reached the round number of Opus 40, but in his personal catalogue he had left two blanks, pencilling in just ‘miscellaneous songs’, so the four sets were allocated to these numbers, the Hardy to Opus 19, the two here to Opus 13.
Finzi, at the time deep in composing his ode For St Cecilia, thought poorly of the idea and of the collection, but must have enjoyed the irony of rejecting St Cecilia in words very different from Blunden’s celebrating her.
Finzi was a practical man and knew that a single song, unless the composer’s name guaranteed its sale, or it was taken up by a popular singer, could easily be overlooked.
