Cecilia replied on the 29th April saying she would have sent it with even greater pleasure if it had been more like her.
She begged the Marchioness not to think this was the fault of 'the master', explaining it was done when she was very young and since that time she had changed so much no one would recognise it as being her.

Compared with the more elegant portraits of the Belle Ferronière and Cecilia Gallerani, the painting of the young man looking out of the picture towards the right seems rather wooden, partly due to the fact that the musician's upper body is facing in the same direction as his gaze.

And it is, ironically, through her distracted gaze that the spectator of 'Circa 1492' is first inscribed and then held to the ideology and iconography of Renaissance, eurocentric 'humanness' that lies behind the attempt to present cultural difference in marvellous parallels.

Leonardo´s Lady with an Ermine depicts Cecilia Gallerani, mistress of Ludovico Sforza, the duke of Milan.
To Leonardo the ermine was a symbol of moderation and purity.
The animal is also a pun on the sitter´s surname, because the Greek word for ermine (galee) is similar to the Italian "Gallerani." In addition, the ermine also serves as an emblem of the duke, having been endowed with the Order of the Ermine in 1488.

It is one of only three female portraits he painted, and is in better condition than most of his other paintings: a door in the background was overpainted, a transparent veil on the model's head was turned to an extravagant hairdo, and several fingers were grossly retouched.
Leonardo met Cecilia Gallerani in Milan in 1484 while both were living in Castello Sforzesco, the Palace of Ludovico "Il Moro" Sforza.
When he was commissioned to paint her portrait in 1485, he represented her holding an ermine either as a pun on her name (the Greek for ermine is galay) or because Ludovico Sforza's emblem was "L'Ermellino", though it is also read as a symbol of purity.

It seems to me that though the ermine looks particularly large in Cecilia's arms, we must remember that she is very young in this painting, and thus it makes sense for an animal of that size to fill a little girl's arms.
However, given the age of Cecilia, and the irony of her name and Lodovico's badge, it is almost undisputable that this is, in fact, an ermine in the portrait.
For Leonardo, the ermine was not only a symbol of chastity to describe Cecilia Gallerani, but it also served as a pun on her name.

Acclaimed for her incomparable beauty and sparkling intelligence, Gallerani was noted for her ability to carry on learned discussions with famous theologians and philosophers.
Tradition has described Cecilia Gallerani as the duke's mistress, but it is difficult to reconcile her high social status and intellectual renown with the previously clandestine and inferior position of mistresses at court.
More likely, Gallerani's position at the Sforza court was as an early instance of the courtesan, the new type emerging in the late fifteenth century who --in contrast to the silent, chaste, and obedient wife-- was rhetorically celebrated as intelligent, accomplished, outspoken, and sensual.
