Cedar Creek Wildlife Project, Inc., Northeast Indiana, Cedar Creek History
At the end of the last ice age, the upper part of Cedar Creek began as an "ice-marginal" channel at the western edge of the Erie Lobe of the glacial ice and formed a single stream with the Eel River in what is now Whitley County.
The result of Cedar Creek's "piracy" was to increase the size of the Maumee River drainage system at the expense of that of the Wabash.
Cedar Creek itself fell victim to stream piracy by Fish Creek to the northeast, which captured the Cedar's headwaters in what is now Steuben County to connect directly with the St. Joseph.

 2003 Success stories: Indiana
The dredging of Cedar Creek would not only destroy aquatic habitat and the ability of endangered plants and animals to retain their foothold along Cedar Creek, but would also be detrimental to the quality of the water flowing through the creek.
Being able to establish the presence of the endangered Indiana bat in the old growth woods of the watershed, would greatly strengthen the capacity of environmental organizations to provide protection for the Cedar Creek Corridor from logging, development and the challenges of the drainage board.
The fact that the Indiana bat was not netted could mean that this area is too far north and out of their range or that we were just unsuccessful in finding them during this study.

Cedar Creek Canyon (Indiana) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This was part of a general drainage reversal that occurred in northeastern Indiana as the Maumee River opened and captured drainage that was previously part of the watershed of the Wabash.
The flow reversal in lower Cedar Creek was probably accelerated by the downcutting of the St. Joseph River, which increased the velocity of its tributaries, causing them to erode toward their headwaters (headward erosion).
The portion of Cedar Creek that flows through it, from river mile 13.7 to the creek's confluence with the St. Joseph, is officially designated as an "Outstanding State Resource Water" and is one of four streams in Indiana's Natural, Scenic and Recreational Rivers system.

Cedar Creek (Indiana) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upper Cedar Creek originated as an ice-marginal channel at the western edge of the Erie Lobe of the Wisconsin Glacier and formed a single stream with the southwest-flowing Eel River which connected to the Wabash River.
Blockage of the Eel's channel by outwash from the canyon and a decline in the volume of meltwater caused lower Cedar Creek to reverse its flow.
Once a meandering stream, upper Cedar Creek was channelized (straightened and deepened) in the early 20th Century for agricultural and urban drainage, which has increased the watershed's vulnerability to erosion and contaminated runoff.
