GENETIC RESOURCES OF SWIETENIA AND CEDRELA IN THE NEOTROPICS: Proposals for Coordinated Action
In Brazil, Cedrela fissilis was studied by Crestana (Kageyama, 1996) who found that only trips visited the flowers of this species; in Mexico, Parraguirre and Calix (1996) report the presence of trips visiting the flowers of S.
Figueroa (1994) indicates that in the forests of the Petén on alluvial and limestone mother rock, the presence of Swietenia macrophylla was 2.25, 2.34 and 2.30 individuals per hectare.
Cedrela odorata presents a lesser number of individuals per hectare than Swietenia macrophylla: in Quintana Roo, Mexico average is 0.65 trees per hectare when considering individuals of 15 cm and up to greater than 85 cm in diameter, while for trees between 45 and 65 cm in diameter, only 0.175 trees per hectare are found.

International Conference "Tree Rings and People"
The dendroecological studies on Swietenia macrophylla King and Cedrela odorata L. were initiated by the need for further knowledge on the relationship of exogenous input and the tree growth of these high quality timber species of the Amazon, which are already strongly exploited in primary forests.
An annual growth pattern marked by a fibre band and a subsequent formation of large sized vessels embedded in paratracheal parenchyma was found in the xylem of Cedrela.
The annual formation of increment zones in Swietenia and Cedrela was induced by the seasonal variation of the water supply of the study sites.

GENETIC RESOURCES OF SWIETENIA AND CEDRELA IN THE NEOTROPICS: Proposals for Coordinated Action
In spite of the fact that a large number of species in the family Meliaceae have a high potential value as sources of wood and timber, only a few of these species are utilized extensively.
During recent decades the populations of Swietenia and Cedrela have been affected by a number of factors, particularly deforestation, which decimates populations; and by selective exploitation of the best individual trees, which is likely to have negative affects on the genetic constitution of the populations.
Actions are proposed to be undertaken within the framework of a co-operative network on genetic resources which will facilitate contacts and collaboration between interested individuals and institutions, and will help contribute to the knowledge, management, use, promotion and conservation of the genetic resources of these species.

Cedrela odorata is a tropical hardwood tree that has been listed as an environmental weed in South Africa.
It has been trialed in Australia as a potential timber species but may become invasive in the tropical and sub-tropical humid zones of northern/eastern Australia and the monsoon zone of northern Australia.
As such, the tree may not be a true pioneer species but may be better suited to colonising small gaps created in forest canopies.

Cedro hembra (Cedrela odorata) is the most commercially important and widely distributed species in the genus Cedrela.
Known as Spanish-cedar in English commerce, the aromatic wood is in high demand in the American tropics because it is naturally termite- and rot-resistant.
Attempts to grow Cedrela in plantation systems in Latin America were almost entirely unsuccessful until recently.

Cedrela serrata is a moderate-sized deciduous tree, in favourable situations attaining a height of 30 m and a girth of up to 3.3 m.
The genus Cedrela is included in the tribe Cedreleae of the sub-family Swietenioideae, as is the genus Toona.
Cedrela differs from the latter by its prominent androgynophore with petals and filaments adnate to it, the cuplike calyx, the bigger and more woody capsule, and seedlings having entire leaflets.
