Ackermann function - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ackermann proved that A is a recursive function, a function a computer with infinite memory can calculate, but it is not a primitive recursive function, a class of functions including almost all familiar functions such as addition and factorial.
In combination with the Ackermann function's applications in analysis of algorithms, discussed later, this debunks the theory that all useful or simple functions are primitive recursive functions.
The Ackermann function, due to its definition in terms of extremely deep recursion, can be used as a benchmark of a compiler's ability to optimize recursion.

Floor function - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, the floor function is the function defined as follows: for a real number x, floor(x) is the largest integer less than or equal to x.
Being a piecewise constant function, its derivative is zero where it exists, that is, at all points which are not integers.
In fancy language: the floor function is part of a Galois connection; it is the upper adjoint of the function which embeds the integers into the reals.

Math Forum - Ask Dr. Math
Date: 10/16/2000 at 11:42:14 From: Raymond Subject: Differentiate a ceiling Hi Dr. Math, I have a problem involving differentiating the ceiling function, as follows: D = ceiling(M/p) * (p+H)/b - (k-1) * (p+H)/b where M, H, b and k are constants.
By the way, the question you asked is not particularly relevant to the problem you were trying to solve: minimizing D as a function of P. Differentiating will only work if the function is continuous and differentiable on the interval where you are seeking the minimum.
Functions which involve the ceiling function are discontinuous every place that the argument of the ceiling takes an integer value.

Although the phase observable, which is roughly speaking conjugate to the number operator, does not exist as a hermitian operator -- this is a longstanding and still popular problem, initiated by Dirac in 1927 -- it exists as a so-called general observable and permits a probability interpretation via a phase distribution on the unit circle.

For example, you can use this function to quickly round a number such as 25.8768 to a specific number of decimal places, such as two decimal places (25.88).
CEILING rounds the value up (away from zero) to the nearest multiple or fraction you designate—what it terms a "significant" value.
