Celanese, a leading global chemical company with a history of collaboration with Rensselaer, has donated a full laboratory of fuel cell research equipment to the Polymer Center.
Celanese recently closed one of its fuel cell research laboratories in Summit, N.J. As a result, two truckloads of equipment were shipped to Rensselaer, transforming the Rensselaer Fuel Cell Test Laboratory into one of the most extensive fuel cell test laboratories in the United States, according to Brian Benicewicz, director of the center.
The new equipment, which officials at Celanese estimate is valued at $350,000, boosts Rensselaer’s research on high-temperature polymer membranes and increases to 11 the number of fuel cell test stations in its Fuel Cell Test Laboratory.

Celanese Engineering Resins recently acquired the engineering resins business of GAF Corp., providing Celanese an entry into a thermoplastic polyester elastomer product line which the company hopes will boost sales in the automotive sector and complement existing product lines.
The GAF acquisition gives Celanese its first elastomeric material, which will be used for new blends for its existing rigid resin products for the fabrication of automotive body components, such as door panels and fenders, a company spokesman said.
