Celebration of the Lizard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Celebration of the Lizard is an epic performance piece written by Jim Morrison, the late frontman of the rock and roll group The Doors.
Composed as a poem, the piece includes musical sections and passages of allegorical storytelling. The poem was supposed to be a full side of a vinyl record or album, but the other members of the band thought that the extended poetic sections and overall length of the piece made a complete recording impossible.
At the band's live shows, "Celebration" was often performed in its entirety, and was a staple of the Doors' concerts.

Despite Jim's desires and efforts to make it work, Celebration of the Lizard was never released on a studio-recorded album, only as a live recording from one of their many concerts (on the album Absolutely Live).
Celebration of the Lizard consists of seven different segments--Lions in The Street, Wake Up, A Little Game, The Hill Dwellers, Not To Touch The Earth, Names Of The Kingdom, and The Palace of Exile--some of which tie into each other, and some of which are not connected other than the musical transition.
The recording I have heard of Celebration of the Lizard begins with Jim setting the scene for the audience, as he often used to do in the studio with his band-mates.

There’s no denying that one of the deciding factors in scrapping Celebration was Morrison’s heavy drinking in and out of the studio.
For the most part, Shiner did his homework on the Celebration segment, but as Shackleford guides The Doors into producing the album, Orange County Suite, another Morrison song that was rejected about the same time is never mentioned, which would have earned the author an A++ for trivia completeness.
Sadly for Doors fans, the Celebration is neither as lengthy, in-depth or sympathetic as the Brian Wilson/Jimi Hendrix segments.

Doors successfully began undertaking more ambitious musical projects, such as "The Celebration of the Lizard," a half-hour fusion of music, drama and poetry that left crowds stunned into utter silence by its conclusion.

Celebration Of The Lizard was a long poem; broken into separate pieces, detailing the power that Morrison has as he awakes in a dusty, mysterious city, and who becomes possessed by the lizard.
What followed Miami were a succession of cancelled shows, Morrison breaking down and the eventual retreat into the studio to record Morrison Hotel/Hard Rock Cafe and LA Woman, then finally onto Paris to recover, get away from the madness and embrace his own death in an apartment he and Pamela were renting.
As with all celebrity deaths, it was reputedly mishandled so, as with Elvis after him, stories quickly sprung up that Morrison was, in fact, still alive.
