Ceres is shojo manga, but before all of you explosion-happy bloodthirsty shonen readers shun this series (while simultaneously throwing up to exhibit your disdain for girly shojo comics), I can assure you that it's not like most other shojo out there.

Mangamaniacs Review: Ceres: Celestial Legend by Yû Watase   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Aya, the main character, is an unusual character, and plenty of attention is paid to establishing her as the brash, rebellious, yet softhearted teenager she is. When she finds herself attracted to an apparent enemy, and her family turns on her, these plot developments have much more impact.
Ceres quickly gets beyond the simple setup ("Aya has magical powers, can she beat the bad guys and save her brother?") and starts ratcheting up the tension on a multi-layered story of trust and betrayal that I found really satisfying.
Ceres is, for the most part, as pleasing to look at as it is to read.

Her robe, which enabled her to return to her home, was stolen by a young man who forced her to marry him, beginning a long line of half-human, half-celestials.
The introduction of the characters as teasingly affectionate and refreshingly normal basically contrasts with the rather brutal fate that's in store for them, since Aya and Aki's birthday proves to be more than just the normal trip to Grandpa's house, as their lives as teenagers are suddenly and irrevocably destroyed.
You see, Aya harbors a celestial being known as a tennyo, who may seem like a Western angel, but is nowhere near as benign.

No appearance from the all-powerful goddess Ceres this issue, as her alter-ego Aya manages to keep her under wraps for the whole issue.
Yuhi then manages to lost Aya in a family tower block - remember that her family have been trying to kill her (to get rid of Ceres it seems) - and the issue closes with Aya confronted by one of her cousins, who seems to know rather more about Ceres than she does...
This issue is a little more confusing than previous issues, although there is an excellent "story-so-far" section at the front, it is difficult telling some of the characters apart, and keeping track of their motives.
