The route through the state of Campeche is flat, flat, flat forever but there are many small roadside wetlands and plenty of birds and for quite a while the road runs close to the coast.

In case you haven´t got a map handy: Celestun (90km from Merida) is located on the west-coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, the chunk of Mexico that juts out north of Belize and Guatemala to separate the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean.
The local tourist boat owners are becoming very aware of this, as exemplified recently by their outrage when an unknown boat roared straight at the colony causing them to take flight in panic.
In Celestun the visitor can see the spectacular flamingo in a lush green tropical backdrop accessible to anybody, and even those with very limited nature interest are likely to enjoy themselves.

This tour extension was part of my plan from the beginning, for I wanted to see the main feeding area of the American Flamingo, as well as other species of waterfowl and shorebirds among the mangrove forest and open waters of this shallow estuary of 2-meter deep waters.
I was most impressed with the exciting 10-seat covered motor boat trip across the estuary to the flamingo feeding area, including a stop at a fresh-water spring with tiger herons and fish below the elevated walkways.
While our lunch was being cooked, I walked across the beach to firm, wet sand and down the beach a half-block where I discovered not one, but two lighthouses within 40 feet of each other.
