It became an issue, but only briefly, at the time of Ahern's election as leader of the Fianna Fail party, when the man he displaced, Albert Reynolds, expressed none too subtly the view that the Irish people were entitled to know where their leader slept at night.
Larkin is now a paid public official in Ahern's office, looking after his constituency organization.
Both arguments are somewhat shaky: In particular, Ahern disclosed the nature of his relationship with Larkin publicly in 1992, and has referred to it directly on a number of other occasions since then.

Two years ago, at the height of the O'Flaherty affair, Celia Larkin telephoned press photographer Eamonn Farrell to tell him that she was about to go to the O'Flaherty home to commiserate with Mrs O'Flaherty over her husband's enforced resignation as a Supreme Court judge.
From sharing top tables with the most powerful men on the planet, Larkin was reduced to peeking at the guest of honour from the sidelines, her banishment as deliberate as it was cruel.
Larkin's absence from the Rome consistory had prompted comment, so it was inconceivable that Ahern and his advisers were unaware of the sensitivities of the issue.
