  The new celibacy
In certain religions and on some spiritual paths, a person may choose to be celibate for life in order to keep his or her attention on the most elevated levels of knowledge and experience in devotion to God.
Life celibates are usually individuals who are physically, mentally, and socially self-sufficient and who have no real need of other people in order to be happy, even though they may be devoted to helping others.
Since being celibate (whether for a day, a week, a year, or a lifetime) means refraining from sexual activity and since many books on sex have given masturbation the blue ribbon for most terrific orgasms, it is clear that if you want to indulge in celibacy, you don't masturbate.

A View of the Celibate Gift (Purposeful Singleness)
The term "celibate" is often used today to refer to someone who is abstaining from sex for a period of time or has recommitted to abstinence, and does not capture the essence of virginity.
But the person with the celibate gift does not condemn Christian marriage, is not afraid of physical intimacy, is not antisocial, is not irresponsible, is not immature, is not naïve, and is not a "loner." These are all stereotypes.
The celibate takes comfort in knowing that social norms on this earth are fading and that her eternal mission cannot be diluted by labels.

When discussing celibate chastity, or Christian marriage for that matter, we need to diffuse the myths about what is normal and what is not.

A person choosing a life of celibate chastity puts his or her emphasis on developing and pursuing ways of loving, rather than on genital behaviour or his or her lack of it.

The unique contribution of the study is that it helps us understand a few of the factors that might promote healthy celibacy in the priesthood since a control group of non-offenders was also included.
What is significant, however, is the fact that the large population of non-offending Catholic priests is not untouched by sexual abuse, yet, most of them, who are, do not necessarily become themselves sexual offenders.
