Cell adhesion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cells are often not found in isolation, rather they tend to stick to other cells or non-cellular components of their environment.
Cell adhesion generally involves protein molecules at the surface of cells, so the study of cell adhesion involves cell adhesion proteins and the molecules that they bind to.
Cell adhesion proteins hold synapses together and the regulation of synaptic adhesion is involved in learning and memory.

 VCAM1 - vascular cell adhesion molecule 1
The aim of this study was to determine circulating levels of adhesion molecules in serum from patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) to investigate the relationship between soluble ICAM-1, ELAM-1, and VCAM-1 liberated by activated vascular endothelium and the development of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH) in patients with CDH.
Since cell adhesion molecules are involved in this process, investigations on the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule in the lower uterine segment and in vitro experiments on human umbilical vein endothelial cells were performed.
Stimulation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells by VEGF or bFGF for 18 h up-regulated intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 expression and significantly increased PMNL adhesion and TEM in response to complement fragment 5a (C5a) or interleukin (IL)-8.

NRCAM - neuronal cell adhesion molecule
The neuronal cell adhesion molecule Bravo/Nr-CAM is a cell surface protein of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily and is closely related to the L1/NgCAM and neurofascin molecules, all of which contain six immunoglobulin domains, five fibronectin repeats, a transmembrane region, and an intracellular domain.
Neuronal cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) decreased in pyriform cortex and amygdala of kindled rats, indicating neuronal degeneration.
It is caused by mutations in L1CAM that encodes a multifunctional transmembrane neuronal cell adhesion molecule.

Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) & coronary heart disease Indian Journal of Medical Research ...
Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) is a 130-kDa member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules.
In addition to its role in vascular cell adhesion, there is growing evidence that PECAM-I can transduce signals that suppress programmed cell death which is thought to be via its ability to inhibit cytochrome C release from mitochondria after exposure of cells to a wide range of cytotoxic stimuli3.
PECAM-1 however is no ordinary adhesion molecules with its wide variety of functions in platelet activation, inflammation, cell survival, and the immune response.
