Antonin Dvorak, born in Nlahozeves, Czechoslovakia was the eldest son of Frantisek, the local butcher and innkeeper, and Anna, the daughter of an estate steward.
Dvorak completed his Cello Concerto in that same year for his friend Hans Wihan - the sketches for the Concerto were in his luggage on his return from New York.
The Cello Concerto is a fine example this talent; set in three contrasted movements, it displays power in the first, warm lyricism in the second and bravura in the third.

Antonin Dvorak - NPRN Composer of the Month
Dvorak left the orchestra in 1871, when he was 30, in order to have more time for composition, but that meant that for a number of years his income was meager and primarily the result of teaching (and he did have a church job for three years beginning in 1874).
Dvorak rocketed to fame on the shoulders of his first set of Slavonic Dances, published in 1878; once these were overwhelmingly successful Simrock was always eager to publish more works by Dvorak, and once his music was published Dvorak did not need to work so hard to promote his music.
Dvorak's role was to be a figurehead for the conservatory and to see what he could do to help found a national school (in the larger sense) of composition.

 Reviews: Dvorak/Herbert CD
Dvorak, who (Folkman reports) had considered the cello unsuited to the solo role in a full-length concerto, was so impressed by Herbert's score (and perhaps his playing as well) that he had a change of heart and set about writing his own concerto.
His Cello Concerto in E minor is a worthy contribution to the Romantic repertoire for his instrument: beautifully orchestrated and boasting good ideas (if without the unforgettable melodies and sheer genius of the Dvorak).
The greatest of romantic cello scores is the Opus 104 Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904).

Cello Concerto (Dvořák) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor, Opus 104 is one of the most well-known cello concerti.
Wihan, among others, had asked for a cello concerto for quite some time, but Dvořák always refused, stating that the cello was a fine orchestral instrument but totally insufficient for a solo concerto.
Wihan suggested several changes to the score of the concerto, the most notorious of which was the cadenza at the end of the third movement.

Dvorak's Cello Concerto in A major (1865) fits into all three of those categories, but that didn't dissuade the German composer and musicologist Gunter Raphael, in the 1920s, from unearthing it in the first place; and, what's more, abridging and orchestrating it.
Dvorak's first two Symphonies were composed either side of his A major Cello Concerto, yet the orchestra plays no part in Dvorak's version (or rather 'plan') for his Concerto, which exists with piano accompaniment only; and, in sketch form, apparently runs to some eighty minutes in duration.

A prime motivator for Dvorak's Cello Concerto was Victor Herbert- the same Victor Herbert who later won renown as the composer of some of the best-loved Operettas of the early 20th Century.
Dvorak attended that performance and was deeply impressed with the musical potential afforded by the combination of solo Cello and Orchestra.
The Fifth Symphony was an uncommonly crucial one for Tchaikovsky; at a Moscow performance of his Violin Concerto in 1882, one critic suggested that Tchaikovsky was "written out", and that his music was tired, uninspired, and the work of a man past his creative prime.

Elgar does the musical equivalent at the opening of the Cello Concerto, placing the listener in the middle of things from the work's opening bars. This is not the way concertos are supposed to begin.
This main theme is passed from orchestra to cello and back again, becoming more anguished with each restatement, until it finally returns on the cello in the same subdued manner in which we heard it first.
Now the cello begins an extended soliloquy that is the concerto's core, just as the cadenza of the Violin Concerto is the core of that work.

Dvorák's Cello Concerto, composed during his second stay in America, is one of the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire.
This guide explores Dvorák's reasons for composing a concerto for an instrument which he at one time considered unsuitable for solo work, its relationship to his American period compositions and how it forms something of a bridge with his operatic interests.
A particular focus is the concerto's unique qualities: why it stands apart in terms of form, melodic character and texture from the rest of Dvorák's orchestral music.
