The première of the cello concerto was given by Felix Salmond on 27 October 1919 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer, at the Queen's Hall in London.
Priestley used the concerto in his 1948 play The Linden Tree in which the daughter of the play's main character, an aging professor of history who is under pressure to retire, is a cellist, and in Act II she practises the concerto offstage.
The best-loved performance of this piece is that by Jacqueline du Pré, whose recording of the piece in 1965 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli brought her international recognition.

The Solo Cello Suites of J S Bach are an early landmark in the repertoire, and a surprising one in many ways, because as an Italian instrument the cello was usually passed over by German composers in favour of the viola da gamba.
The vocal qualities of the new brighter cello made it ideal for the romantic concerto which expressed the conflict between the individual and society, but it wasn't until the time of the Dvorak Cello Concerto that the instrument was taken up by composers.
Cello concertos and sonatas became a standard task for a composer, and Mstislav Rostropovich was behind the writing of major works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Britten, who wrote three solo sonatas as well as a Cello Symphony.

The acnowledged master of the cello, Mstislav Rostropovich, much like jazz piano virtuoso Oscar Peterson, grunts and plays his way through what I feel to be the greatest of the romantic concertos for cello.
This one may not outshine all others, however, it is a recording of this concerto that demands to be heard and fully deserves to be considered a classic.

The cello writing is similar -- Kraft no doubt showed Haydn what the cello could do -- but, IMHO, the music of the authentic Kraft works is much shallower than that of the D Major Concerto.
But just to quickly recap the situation with the "Haydn" D major concerto, we're caught between the Scylla of the authentic manuscript in Haydn's hand and the Charybdis of the complete impossibility that the music came from Haydn's mind.
I have not played the concerto myself yet, but I have about a dozen of recording of it and was wondering why everyone is doing their own things in the first movement.

That all of Shostakovich's music is, in a sense, vocal is nowhere plainer than in his cello concertos, where the sighs and curses of the soloist contrast with the harsh laughter and Bosch-like leers of the woodwind.
Shostakovich's musical model for his First Cello Concerto was Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto (1952), an enigmatic revision of the composer's already revised First Cello Concerto, which had reached its final form during the Terror in 1938.
Evgeny Chukovsky reports him as saying "I took a simple theme and tried to develop it." As a summary of the First Cello Concerto, this is so clearly inadequate that we must assume he was referring to one section of it (the first movement), or - more probably - that he was being deliberately evasive.

Wihan, who was an acknowledged master of the cello, took it upon himself to amend the score.
The Cello Concerto is a fine example this talent; set in three contrasted movements, it displays power in the first, warm lyricism in the second and bravura in the third.

The composer was not completely successful in his attempt at a grand symphonic work there is a lack of balance of form, and verbosity in some places.

Elgar does the musical equivalent at the opening of the Cello Concerto, placing the listener in the middle of things from the work's opening bars.This is not the way concertos are supposed to begin.
This main theme is passed from orchestra to cello and back again, becoming more anguished with each restatement, until it finally returns on the cello in the same subdued manner in which we heard it first.
Now the cello begins an extended soliloquy that is the concerto's core, just as the cadenza of the Violin Concerto is the core of that work.

It is interesting to note that the work began originally as concerto for violin, composed in 1994 while the composer summered in Sandpoint, Idaho.

The title of this CD, "The Secrets of the Dvorák Cello Concerto," immediately set my hype receptors a-quiver, and I had to fight like blazes to keep an open mind.
She died while the composer was writing his cello concerto, and the references to the song memorialize her in music.
The substitution of Vogler's cello forces Kirchschlager at one point to take both parts (fortunately, consecutive), but it's the place where the lovers disagree whether the bird they hear is the nightingale (so they have time for more sugar) or the lark (in which case Romeo's got to leave).
