Boston.com / News / World / Asia / Brazil eyes shift in trade dominance
As the growth in some of the world's big developing nations rearranges the global dynamics of supply and demand, Amorim is thwarting efforts by the United States and Europe to protect their dominance in world trade.
Seizing those arguments, Amorim last year led the creation of the so-called G-20, a group of nations including China, India, and South Africa that has set the agenda for current WTO discussions on the future of agricultural commerce.
Amorim has political critics, too; many see the minister as an ideologue whose desire to spite the United States and Europe further distances Brazil from the world's most stable democracies.
