Celtic Frost is an innovative heavy metal group from Zürich, Switzerland, best known for their influence on the thrash metal, fl metal and death metal genres.
The newest and seventh Celtic Frost album was financed by the group itself through their own imprint, Prowling Death Records, the organization named after the publisher of the Hellhammer demos and which managed Hellhammer's career.

MSJ - Celtic Frost-Into the Pandemonium
On this, their third album, Celtic Frost decided to veer further away from the pure death metal for which they had become known, injecting elements from classical music, Gothic rock and electronica into their standard ultra-heavy sludge metal formula (which itself was pretty unique in the thrash-saturated 80's).

 Celtic Frost - Death/Black Metal
The return of Celtic Frost, "Monotheist," is both the sound of this band grasping their future firmly for the first time in many years, but also of an attempt to both fit in and innovate that ends up separating internally like oil and water into its component styles, which become correspondingly dramatic.
While this gives the creative minds of Celtic Frost new creative texture with which to work, it brings about a fundamental conflict: Celtic Frost was a band built around the grandeur of non-linear presentation, a slow building of emotion, and then a graceful contrast like morning sunlight through thousand-year old ruins.
In the vinegar bubblegum vocals sometimes used for choruses, this incarnation of Celtic Frost is reminiscent of Voivod or the Sex Pistols, but has none of the distinctly self-explanatory whole composed of architectonic imagery and sound and style supporting a concept that those bands had, or older Celtic Frost had, for that matter.

Formed from the ashes of fl/death metal band Hellhammer in 1984, the Swiss based Celtic Frost were a pivotal influence on the death, fl, speed, and gloom metal genres, pioneering many of the musical styles and avant-garde elements that have since become synonymous with bands like Sepultura, Emperor, Dark Funeral, and Enslaved.
The first virtually alienated Celtic Frost's fans, whilst the latter - regarded as a strong comeback album featuring Ain returning to the fold - was considered too avant-garde for MTV airplay, sabotaging the potential mainstream appeal of David Bowie ('Heroes') and Bryan Ferry ('This Island Earth') covers.
Celtic Frost co-founder and frontman Thomas Gabriel Fischer regularly sends commentaries on historical issues, and the site's content has many fundamental insights not found elsewhere such as insider coverage of a 1998 New York City reunion.
