  The Evergreens Cemetery - History and Famous People
During the 1860's the Cemetery of the Evergreens ran into financial problems and in 1866 the cemetery was put into receivership and a court appointed lawyer took control of the day to day operations.
In 1870 a law was passed in the New York legislature allowing the Cemetery of the Evergreens to be re-incorporated as "The Evergreens" under new ownership and a new set of bylaws.
Present day, "The Evergreens" is controlled by a board of seven trustees, including a president and a chairman of the board, who oversee the day to day operations and the prudent investment of the cemetery's trust funds.

The Hamiota cemetery is situated less than 1/2 mile south of the town of Hamiota, along Highway #21, on the S.W. The cemetery is a well kept and has a chain link fence all along the west side facing onto highway #21.
The row of evergreens between the old and new cemetery cuts off 4 rows of graves through blocks J,K, and L from the south (new) half of the cemetery.
This cemetery was transcribed by James W. Routledge M.G.S 529 as part of the Manitoba Genealogical Society's goal to have all the cemeteries in Manitoba recorded.

Newspaper reports of 1958, when the land was sold (for $187,500), indicate the cemetery predated even "the Old White Church" (next to it) which existed from 1787 to 1928, and may have been started as early as 1708.
The remainder found, 8 boxes of mixed unidentified remains or 21 identified persons (records aren't clear) were brought to the Cemetery of the Evergreens in Brooklyn on June 13, 1958.
The cemetery is beautiful, with huge old trees, and the church's large stone is in excellent condition.
