Centaur class aircraft carrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Centaur class of aircraft carriers of the British Royal Navy was the last of the light fleet carrier designs started during the closing years of World War II.
With the extended completion periods of the units, and the rapid advances in aircraft carrier design at the time of their building, it was almost inevitable that large differences should be seen between the various members of the class.
The Centaur class were intermediate in size between the Majestic and Colossus class light carriers and the full Audacious class attack carriers.

HMS Centaur (R06) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Centaur (R06) was a Centaur-class light fleet carrier of the Royal Navy.
She was the only ship of her class to retain the original configuration with a straight axial flight deck rather than the angled flight decks of her three sister ships.
She was laid down in 1944 in Belfast with the contract being awarded to Harland and Wolff, though was not launched until 1947, sometime after World War II had come to a close, due to delays relating to the end of the war.

Centaur - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Centaur   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Dwelling in the mountains of Thessaly, the centaurs were the offspring of Ixion and Nephele, the rain-cloud.
Alternatively, the centaurs were the offspring of Kentauros (the son of Ixion and Nephele) and some Magnesian mares or of Apollo and Hebe.
The Centaurs are best known for their fight with the Lapithae, caused by their attempt to carry off Hippodamia (a "horse"woman herself) on the day of her marriage to Peirithous, king of the Lapithae, himself the son of Ixion.

Encyclopedia: Aircraft carrier   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
An aircraft carrier is a warship whose main role is to deploy and recover aircraft—in effect acting as a sea-going airbase.
Modern aircraft carriers have a flat-top deck, the flight deck that serves as a take-off and landing area for aircraft.
By the late 1930s, aircraft carriers around the world typically carried three types of aircraft: torpedo bombers, also used for conventional bombings and reconnaissance; dive bombers, also used for reconnaissance (in the U.S. Navy, this type of aircraft were known as "scout bombers"); and fighters for fleet defence and bomber escort duties.

Colossus Class Light Fleet Aircraft Carriers
Aircraft cranes, workshops, deck houses and defensive anti-aircraft weapons were added to the flight deck and although space was provided for aircraft deck parking, all equipment necessary to operate aircraft was absent, and consequently aircraft were hoisted aboard.
The eight Colossus class carriers were not units of the Centaur and exempt from the cuts, particularly as they were slower and carried fewer aircraft than other classes.
Aircraft Carriers were vital in the Korean War (1950-3), providing mobile airfields for allied warplanes and four Royal Navy Colossus Class vessels participated in the three year conflict.
