 CNN.com - Chandra spies bursting galactic beauty - August 13, 2002
The galaxy, known as Centaurus A, is a color-packed assortment of arcs, jets and dust streaks, the result of a big burst millions of years ago.
In the portrait of the turbulent galaxy, two enormous arcs of gas at temperatures exceeding millions of degrees are part of a dust ring that extends 25,000 light-years in diameter.
And active galaxies like Centaurus A could have played a critical role in the evolution of galaxies in the early universe, when galaxies crashed into one another with much greater frequency, according to astronomers.

Origins: Library: News: Story of the Universe
The galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is one of the most studied objects in the southern sky.
Infrared observations of the innermost regions (of Centaurus A (on an arcsec scale) were recently done by a team of astronomers from Italy, UK and USA [1], by means of the multi-mode ISAAC instrument on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory.
Peering through the thick walls of dust enshrouding the nuclear region of Centaurus A, the astronomers succeeded in acquiring several high-quality spectra of the thin central disk; the exposure time for each spectrum was (about) 35 min.

 Centaurus
It was founded in 1950 as an international journal for the history of science and medicine by Dr. Jean Anker who was a historian of biology and Chief Librarian at the University Library in Copenhagen, in collaboration with Dr. A.
All the members of the academic staff of the Department are on the Editorial Board which is supported by an international group of Consulting Editors all of whom are leading scholars in their field of research.
The present editors feel that Centaurus is an indispensible research tool and should be consulted by all serious students within the history of mathematics, science, and technology.

The First Cepheid Distance to Centaurus A by Ken Croswell
Centaurus A seems to have had an encounter with another galaxy, which sprayed gas and dust across its bulge.
By measuring the brightnesses and periods of 42 Cepheids, Ferrarese and her colleagues find that Centaurus A is 11.2 ± 0.6 (random) ± 0.8 (systematic) million light-years from Earth.
In the past, astronomers have measured the galaxy's distance by observing its red giants, planetary nebulae, Miras (pulsating red giants), and fluctuations in the surface brightness of its bulge.

Headlines@Hopkins: Johns Hopkins University News Releases
Researchers will report in the December Astronomical Journal that their discovery suggests absorption of smaller galaxies may be a significant contributor to the formation of galactic halos, outer perimeters of galaxies where star populations are sparse.
Visible in the upper right corner of this image of the Centaurus A Galaxy is an arc of blue stars left behind when Centaurus A pulled in a smaller galaxy and tore it apart.
At 10 million light years from our galaxy, Centaurus A (which is visible with binoculars in the southern hemisphere's night sky, but not visible at all in the northern hemisphere) is quite close in galactic terms.

 Chandra :: Photo Album :: Centaurus A Jet :: 23 Apr 03
This is a composite image of Chandra X-ray (blue) and VLA radio (red) observations showing the inner 4,000 light years of a magnetized jet in Centaurus A. Purple regions are bright in both radio and X-ray.
Because Centaurus A Jet is relatively nearby at a distance of 11 million light years, this image offers one of the most detailed looks yet at the interaction of a jet with gas in its galaxy.
Jets such as the one in Centaurus A Jet are widespread phenomena in the cosmos, and represent one of the primary means for extracting energy from the vicinity of a fl hole.

Faraday Rotation Effects associated with the Radio Source Centaurus A
SCIAMA has proposed an interesting explanation of the Faraday rotation which is observed to be associated with the radiation from Centaurus A.
The agreement between the observed rotation and that which would be produced by magnetic fields, electron densities and path lengths appropriate to his model of the local cluster of galaxies
Their results, which are soon to be published, indicate that there is a substantial galactic contribution to the rotation; in general, sources at high galactic latitudes show less rotation than those close to the plane.

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has discovered a pair of giant gas arcs in the galaxy, at temperatures of multimillion degrees, that are part of a 25,000-light-year-wide ring aglow in X rays.
One explanation for the ring is that it formed in the tumultuous aftermath of the collision in which Centaurus A snared the smaller galaxy.
