 Guardian | Sunbather stabbed to death in square
Rosemarie Ross, from Aldridge, Birmingham, was soaking up the spring heatwave at lunchtime on Saturday as she relaxed in Centenary Square, Birmingham.
Paramedics called to Centenary Square managed to revive Ms Ross and she was taken to Birmingham's city hospital in Winson Green where doctors battled for five hours to save her life.
Detective Sergeant Steven Smith said: "The victim was sunbathing with her friend in Centenary Square when for no reason she was attacked by a man with a knife and received one stab wound, which proved fatal." Police said a knife had been found in a canal in the area.

 John Baskerville
John Baskerville (January 28, 1706 - January 8, 1775) was a printer in Birmingham, and an associate of some of the members of the Lunar Society.
It is thought that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who once lived in Birmingham, may have borrowed his name for one of his Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
When a canal was built through the land he was placed in storage in a warehouse for several years before being secretly deposited in the crypt of Christ Church, Birmingham.

Birmingham's answer to the London Eye is finally in place in Centenary Square and will be open to the public on the 21st October 2004 until Sunday 27th February 2005.
Centenary Square will play host to a high-tech 60-metre observation wheel, but as this time it is a new wheel it boasts larger glass gondolas which are fully heated and air conditioned and with a capacity to seat up to eight people.
Jonathan Shipley, a director of World Tourist Attractions, says: "We are delighted to be returning to Birmingham having enjoyed such a successful stay in Centenary Square earlier this year.

The Ferris Wheel is not a permanant feature of Birmingham having arrived in our city from Paris where it was last located.
The Wheel is owned by World Tourist Attractions Ltd and the wheel was recently transported from Paris to Birmingham on 22 trucks.
The company put this embarassing hitch down to technical difficulties and it is unlikely that this commentary will change due to the short duration of the wheel's stay in Birmingham City.

There are two views dating from 1847 and showing how polluting, steam-powered mills and factories clustered along the canal banks, causing the central area of Birmingham to become very polluted and leading to the flight of the middle class.
Although it doesn't show up on the picture, there were two big canal basins in what is now Centenary Square.
The Warwick Bar, where the Birmingham Canal met the Warwick and Birmingham, which in 1929 merged with several other canals to become the Grand Union Canal linking Birmingham and London.

A statue of Boulton, Watt and Murdoch by William Bloye stood until recently, outsde the Regsoter Office, in Birmingham, England.
It is known locally as 'The Golden Boys' or 'The Carpet Salesmen', after its colour, and the partially-rolled-up plan of a steam engine which they are examining.
The statue has been removed for restoration, and is then planned to be relocated across the road in Centenary Square.
