Frequently Asked Questions about Centennial Airport
Centennial continues to be the major local reliever airport for Denver International Airport, so that DIA can focus its capacity on airline operations.
Centennial consistently ranks the second busiest airport in the nation among airports that are not certified for airline services, and in the top 25 of all airports, including LAX, Chicago’s O’Hare and New York’s La Guardia.
The Centennial Airport Board of Commissioners, as well as the Arapahoe County Board of County Commissioners has long stated that Centennial is, and should remain, a general aviation reliever airport for DIA.

No. 01-226 and 01-230: Arapahoe County Public Airport Auth. v. FAA City of Greenwood Village v. FAA - Opposition
An airport "may prohibit or limit any given type, kind or class of aeronautical use of the airport if such action is necessary for the safe operation of the airport or necessary to serve the civil aviation needs of the public." Ibid.
Because the Airport Authority had failed to satisfy its burden of proving that its ban on scheduled passenger service is required for either the safe operation of the airport or civil aviation needs, the FAA concluded that the ban does not fall within the Authority's reserved "proprietary powers" under 49 U.S.C. 41713(b) (3).
The agency found that "[t]he initiation of scheduled passenger service at Centennial Airport is unlikely to change the predominantly general aviation role of the airport" (ibid.), and claims to the contrary were simply not supported by the record (see id. at 53 and nn.33 and 34).

Centennial Express alleges that the Airport Authority notified Centennial Express that it was revising its airport policy statement and needed to complete the revision before it would enact minimum standards for scheduled passenger service under Part 135.
The Airport Authority has had ample notice of the FAA's position, and the Airport Authority's refusal to comply with its grant assurances after an FAA investigation and several decisions does not suggest an interest in informal resolution.
