PITTSBURGH (December 7, 2004) -- Pennsylvania's Greene County is among the most polluted counties in the nation, yet federal and state agencies have failed to enforce key environmental laws to protect its residents, according to a report released today.
In 2002, Greene County was among the top 2 percent of U.S. counties for toxic air pollution emissions, ranking 38th among the 2,260 counties where air emissions were reported.
The Pennsylvania Environmental Council improves quality of life for all Pennsylvanians by enhancing the Commonwealth's natural and built environments by integrating advocacy, education and implementation of community and regional action projects.

The Pennsylvania and CH and D Railroads and the Dayton and Xenia Traction ran from west to east across the township.
Beavercreek Township is the cradle of Greene County, for it was the little log cabin built by Benjamin Whiteman, occupied by Peter Borders, a short distance south of the log mill of Owen Davis erected in 1798 on Beavercreek that the first meeting of the associate judges of Greene County met May 10, 1803.
New Germany in the northwest corner of the township was a settlement of farmers of German extraction.

William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania and noted pacifist Quaker, apparently did not bestow his ideals of equality to all people, as he was himself a slave owner.

Moorman, second son of Charles T. Moorman, sr., was born on the 8th of February, 1824; commenced the practice of medicine in Jamestown, in the spring of 1858; and was married to Julia A. Thompson, September 19, 1866.
Our subject was born in Warren County, February 22, 1818, and was married July 21, 1842, to Miss Rosanna Bargdill, daughter of Joel and Phoebe (Strong) Bargdill, who came to Ohio, in 1815, with her parents, and located temporarily near Jamestown, then removed to the farm now owned by our subject, where the father died.
The father is a native of this county, born April 14, 1806, and married in December, 1846.

In the Green Mountain Mine district are 5 collieries, producing in 1883, 429,555 tons; in the Black Creek district, 24 collieries, producing 2,455,091 tons; in the Hazleton district, 15 collieries, producing 1,443,448 tons; and in the Beaver Meadow district (partly in Schuylkill county) 12 collieries, producing 1,236,006 tons; total, 56 collieries and 5,564,100 tons.

During an October 1845 incident in which a party of Maryland slave catchers was led from Harrisburg to the William Rutherford farm in Swatara Township, Moll Rockey, a Harrisburg resident, was employed by the slave catchers as extra help.
The Jeremiah Zeamer papers in the Cumberland County Historical Society archives note that the toll keepers on the Harrisburg Bridge would allow fugitive slaves to pass for free because they were in sympathy with the cause.

According to estate papers for their father Abraham Adams they were in Greene County by 1832 (by name) - some census records indicate they were born in PA one indicates John was born in Maryland.
These men were related to my ADAMS ancestors of Greene County as my Jacob ADAMS was the executor of the estate of their father Abraham Adams.
