The Center for Media and Democracy (CMD), founded in 1993, is a progressive organization founded and administrated by John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton (amongst others, see "People" below).
According to its website, CMD "strengthens participatory democracy by investigating and exposing public relations spin and propaganda, and by promoting media literacy and citizen journalism."
CMD has been criticized for having an anti-corporate viewpoint by industry lobbyists like Berman and Co., a public affairs firm owned by Rick Berman.

The Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) is an American-based media research group founded in 1993 by environmentalist writer and political activist John Stauber.
Another CMD project is the SourceWatch website (formerly called Disinfopedia), a Wiki, which CMD describes as "a collaborative project to produce a directory of public relations firms, think tanks, industry-funded organizations and industry-friendly experts that work to influence public opinion and public policy on behalf of corporations, governments and special interests."
CMD has stated that it is not affiliated with a political party, but that it does not pretend to lack opinions or a point of view.

WASHINGTON -- March 21 -- Free Press, the nonpartisan media reform group, and the Center for Media and Democracy filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission today, urging FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin to investigate broadcasters who distribute government-sponsored news reports without identifying their source.
Free Press and the Center for Media and Democracy are also working with local groups to establish "citizen agreements" with local stations, under which broadcasters pledge to clearly identify or label pre-packaged reports produced by the government.
The Center for Media and Democracy publishes PR Watch (www.prwatch.org), a newsletter which investigates and exposes how the public relations industry and other professional propagandists manipulate public information, perceptions and opinion on behalf of governments and special interests.
