Center for UFO Studies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) is a privately-funded unidentified flying object (UFO) research group.
Although Dr. Hynek started out as a skeptic and helped the Air Force to debunk most UFO reports, he gradually became convinced that a small number of UFO cases were not hoaxes or explainable as misidentifications of natural phenomena, and that these reports might represent something extraordinary - even alien visitation from other planets.
Following Dr. Hynek's death in 1986, CUFOS was renamed the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies in his honor.

In the study of the UFO phenomenon, we have not yet reached that state where useful conjectures can be made, in the sense that a useful conjecture will lead to a better understanding of the phenomenon.
This study is an examination, chiefly through statistical means, of the subclass of UFO events wherein the car, truck, or other motor vehicle in which a witness was either riding or in near proximity to, was seemingly affected by the presence of a UFO.
I have chosen this type of event to study because, while rare, it is also sufficiently dramatic so that the chance of a witness confounding a misperception-which he or she reports as a UFO — with the effect on the vehicle is quite remote.

FBI LAW ENFORCEMENT BULLETIN ARTICLE by Dr. J. ALLEN HYNEK - FEBRUARY 1975
A body of scientists and other professional persons, all established in their own fields, organized to create a center for UFO studies because no one was "minding the store." Although some wide-ranging studies had been conducted, these had not followed the continuing nature of the UFO phenomenon.
On the one hand, the Center for UFO Studies is helped by receiving UFO reports that have been prescreened, so to speak, by first being reported to a law enforcement agency.
Pattern studies involving statistical analysis of type of UFO occurrences, their frequency, the geographic and time distribution, and the numbers and distribution of witness reporting them, are made; likewise similar studies of types, training, and community status of witnesses are important.
