In the late 1990s and the early years of the new millennium, energy conservation took on renewed importance as power disruptions in various parts of the country raised questions about the nation’s electrical infrastructure and its energy efficiency technologies.
The association and the electrical industry also teamed with the federal government to fund an exhaustive study to investigate the effects of low level electromagnetic frequencies on public health.

New Jersey Institute of Technology, in a consortium with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts University, was awarded the center to serve the Northeast regions.
The goal of the Center is to provide USEPA, industry, and the states the necessary tools needed to reliably connect the identities and concentrations of airborne organic compounds with major anthropogenic pollutant emission sources.
The Center, which was established with participation from HSMRC and the National Science Foundation, has collaborated with YCEES in the area of design and use of biological reactors for removal of heavy metals, engineering and microbiological aspects of in-situ bioremediation, solidification, and stabilization.

 UB Reporter: Ground broken for new student center in SOM
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 3 for the Alfiero Center, the new, three-story addition that will adjoin the Jacobs Management Center of the School of Management on the North Campus.
The center will be named in honor of the chair and CEO of Protective Industries, Sal H. Alfiero, and his wife, Jeanne, who have made a $2 million gift to the school.
The center's stately convening area and three-story atrium will be named for J. Grant Hauber, retired Harold C. Brown executive, and his wife, Marcia, whose $500,000 gift led the campaign for the new structure.
