 Intimacy with God (Thomas Keating)
Keating clearly sees the importance of centering prayer as a way of connecting with God, and entering into the presence of God.
It is also likely that people who are familiar with Keating may know something about the controversy that surrounds the man and his technique of centering prayer.
While some of the objections to centering prayer have merit if centering prayer becomes just another form of meditation, this is not due to Keating's writings as much as a misreading of his works or a misunderstanding of his intentions.

Monastic Interreligious Dialogue Book Review: Intimacy with God
In Intimacy with God, Thomas Keating, a Cistercian monk and former abbot of St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, describes “centering prayer,” a method of prayer that comes out of the Christian tradition, principally The Cloud of Unknowing (a treatise by an anonymous fourteenth-century author) and the work of St. John of the Cross.
He opines that when Our Lady, in various apparitions over the past 200 years, keeps saying, “Please say the rosary,” it is “contemplative prayer that she is primarily requesting.” Keating says the principles underlying centering prayer can deepen the experience of other devotions, such as the Stations of the Cross or chanting of psalms.
During Keating’s 20-year tenure as abbot of St. Joseph’s Abbey, he and his fellow monks became acquainted with their peers in other religious traditions and invited Zen Masters, Transcendental Meditators and ecumenically skilled Catholic theologians to speak and instruct on non-Christian spiritual practices to which the generations of the 60s and 70s increasingly were drawn.

open book: A Short Guide to Eastern Catholic Churches
As for the relative lack of monasticism in the Easten Churches, it may be due to the fact that Orthodox monasticism is often rooted in the virulently anti-Roman and possibly-heretical Hesychast tradition (a counterfeit form of which is peddled by certian foofy Roman-rite monks as "centering prayer").
I think the hesychasts were controversial not because of their mode of prayer per se, but because of the underlying theology that one could, through this prayer, experience God directly in His "energies" - that is to say, one could experience in oneself the "uncreated light" of God that shone, for example, in the Transfiguration.
The Hesychasts will talk about a fifth level of prayer (beyond petitions, spiritual requests, intercessions for others, and thanksgivings; cf 1 Tim 2:1) - a "pure prayer" (kathara proseuche) that issues from the ineffable experience of union with God.

 SteinerBooks - Manifesting God
The process whereby this happens is the foundation of centering prayer—a technique of prayer that Keating and other contemporary mystics have revived out of the ancient mystical traditions of the Desert Fathers and the medieval mystics.
Manifesting God is about the principles of contemplative prayer—the retreat into the "inner room" mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 6:6, where the individual is able to meet God.
In the inner room, the silent space in which God unloads the burdens and false selves that govern our individuality and our daily lives, God acts as a divine therapist, healing us and forcing us to recognize how many barriers we put up between ourselves and an authentic relationship with God.

 Benedict's Dharma events
The Jesuits have the phrase “contemplation in action,” and there’s an aspect of that in these people’s lives: we’re so nourished in the Benedictine tradition by the psalms, and many of these executives begin the day with the psalter and with centering prayer.
We have formed a Community of Joseph that meets for three hours of intense prayer every week with middle managers and MBAs and senior executives, and they pray in the striving and the intensity of their life in the world, and they sing the psalms and then bring to prayer the reality of that world.
That requires a way of thinking and developing out of the richness of the Benedictine tradition a spirituality that is compatible with and interpermeates the sacredness of each of their moments in the difficulties and intensity of their striving as organizational leaders.
