Known as the "Centinela Adobe", this ranch house is considered to be one of the most magnificently preserved smaller adobes in Los Angeles County.
Centinela Springs, with its abundance of clean artesian water was the principle fresh water source in the area dating back to the Ice Age.
The Centinela adobe was deeded to the city of Inglewood in 1956 and was maintained by the Inglewood Department of Parks and Recreation, although the property is actually within the city limits of Los Angeles.

In 1834 Machado constructed a three room adobe at the top of a hill and named it "Centinela," meaning the "sentinel." The Centinela Adobe was continuously occupied until the 1970s.
Wood frame wings were added to either side of the adobe in the 1860s.
Today, the adobe is surrounded by lawns and trees planted in the 19th century.

Built in 1834 by Ignacio Machado, it has been owned by a Civil War General, a Scottish Baronet and Daniel Freeman, founder of Inglewood, whose land office was relocated to the property.
The Land Office originally stood by the railroad depot in 1887, but was moved by Freeman to his home in 1892 and used as his office until his death in 1918.
It was moved to the Adobe grounds as a Bicentennial project in 1975 and now serves as a showplace for Early Inglewood businesses.

Since 1924 the adobe and 17 acres was donated by the different families to the Roman Catholic Church as part of the Casa Claret Retirement Facility.
