The Central Bank Bombing was one of the most devastating terrorist bombings of the 1990s, and was the deadliest attack in the long civil war in Sri Lanka between the government and the Tamil Tigers.
As gunmen traded fire with security guards, the suicide bomber in the truck detonated the massive bomb, which tore through the bank and damaged eight other buildings nearby.
The bombing was the most deadly terrorist attack of 1996, and produced the most deaths of any single attack in the Sri Lankan conflict.

Saddam Hussein ordered Iraq's central bank to hand over $1 billion (£640 million) two days before the US bombing began and told his youngest son, Qusay, to oversee the removal of the cash which was loaded on to three lorries, bank officials said yesterday.
According to bank officials and a security guard who witnessed the removal, Qusay and the senior aide to the president were present during the five-hour operation, which began at 7pm on March 18 and ended at midnight.
A bomb destroyed much of the central bank's interior, while the other two buildings are still scattered with broken glass and scattered papers.

Bombs not only throw off shrapnel themselves, they create lots of deadly flying debris, including flying glass from broken windows, that can kill and maim.
You can't go around bombing residential buildings and killing women and children if you are to retain any respect whatsoever from the local population or, indeed, the world community.
