The Bank of Russia (Russian:Банк России) or the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (Russian: Центральный банк Российской Федерации) is the central bank of Russia.
According to the constitution, the Bank of Russia is an independent entity, with the primary responsibility of protecting the stability of the national currency, the ruble.

By 1992 the Central bank was renamed the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (Bank of Russia), and it assumed full economic control of the assets, technical facilities and other resources of the State Bank of the USSR and all its institutions, enterprises, and organizations.

LONDON (CNNfn) - A Russian central bank official says more than 700 Russian banks may collapse over the next few months raising fears of a global credit crunch, according to press reports.
     Andrei Kozlov, the central bank's first deputy president, told a parliamentary committee that 720 financial institutions, almost half Russia's 1,500 banks may close because the government doesn't have enough money to save them.
In addition, Russian banks are expected to default on many more billions of dollars in commercial loans.
