Electricity Reform Abroad and U.S. Investment, Chapter 2
Electricity privatization in the United Kingdom has occurred in the larger context of the privatization of much of the formerly state-owned UK industries and the diminution of the central government's role in the national economy.
Although electricity prices have generally trailed inflation in the intervening years since electricity reforms were implemented in 1990, electricity consumers have often felt less well treated than industry shareholders, who have realized profits well beyond those reported for UK industry in general over the same period of time.
The national government established an Electricity Generation Board in 1926 whose mission was to construct a national transmission grid, to coordinate the transmission of electricity across the country, and to establish a set of common technological standards.

CEGB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) was the cornerstone of the British electricity industry for almost 50 years, from its nationalisation in 1947 to privatisation in the 1990s.
The CEGB was created from the Central Electricity Authority (formerly the British Electricity Authority) in 1957.
The present electricity market in the UK was built upon the breakup of the CEGB into three generating companies and the National Grid Company.

 More spark for less grief
When electricity privatisation was planned, it was seen as essential that the new arrangements reproduce the efficiencies of the merit order.
Generators were required to bid in to the pool the price and quantity at which they were willing to supply, and the National Grid controllers selected the best bids.
Electricity prices have been too high, because generators were able to manipulate the pool to their advantage and because regional electricity companies made bad deals whose costs they were able to pass on to their customers.

Jameson and Another v. Central Electricity Generating Board and Others   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
McLaren Q.C. for the C.E.G.B. put it, not whether the plaintiff has received the full value of his claim but whether the sum which he has received in settlement of it was intended to be in full satisfaction of the tort.
The argument for the C.E.G.B. was that the date of the settlement agreement should be held to be the effective date for the discharge of the tort.
Had the Board also been a party to the action and the settlement was made only with Babcock, it might more readily be construed that the deceased's rights against the Board, and Babcock's possible liability in contribution were to be preserved.

However, CEGB argued that the claim was barred as the Plaintiff’s claim against Babcock was settled before his death.
CEGB appealed and succeeded by a majority, Lord Lloyd of Berwick dissenting.
The main issue was whether the action could be maintained against CEGB or whether the liability of a concurrent tortfeasors is discharged by a settlement entered into by one of them.

Generators awarded Obligation contracts are typically guaranteed the purchase of their generated electricity at their bid price (with the exception of NFFO-2, where all contracts received the highest accepted bid price for that technology band) for 15 years (with the exception of NFFO-1 and NFFO-2, which have contract termination dates in 1998).
Distribution of electricity at low voltage is the responsibility of NIE for Northern Ireland, SP and SHE for their areas of operation in Scotland, and the RECs for their areas of England and Wales.
The generator sells to the Pool on a half hourly basis, bidding for the price of their electricity and receiving the PPP should their power be required to meet demand.

House of Lords - Jameson and Another v. Central Electricity Generating Board and Others
It is argued on behalf of C.E.G.B. that the claim under the Fatal Accidents Act ("the widow's claim") is now barred on the ground that Mr.
The plaintiffs, who are the deceased's executors, brought the action by writ against the defendant, the Central Electricity Generating Board ("the C.E.G.B.") on behalf of his widow under the Fatal Accidents Act 1976 for damages for her loss of dependency.
So the C.E.G.B. cannot take into credit, by way of set off against any liability to the plaintiffs in this action, the amount which was paid to the deceased in order to settle his claim against Babcock.

Prior to 1990 there were was some competition in CEGB plants from independent power producers using conventional and renewable energy sources, and this sector has continued to grow.
Secondly, electricity settlements were to be taken from the reading of meters that do not record the electricity used each half hour period.

The effects of the proposal by the CEGB to locate one of its new coal-fired power stations at Fawley will have severe repercussions on the development potential of the Calshot Activities Centre as well as severely restricting its present activities.
The Board's proposals to construct a jetty and shorearm would so constrict the area of safe water that the waterborne activities at the Centre would have to be severely curtailed.
In view of the impact on waterborne activities which would ensue at Calshot should the CEGB proposals be realised, it is recommended that this Sub-Committee should state its opposition to the CEGB proposal to develop a coal-fired power station at Fawley together with its associated jetty and shore arm.

Before privatization, the CEGB switched its power stations on (off) to meet increases (decreases) in demand in accordance with a `merit order', which ranked them from least to highest cost to ensure that given demand was met at least cost.
Although the Director-General of Electricity Supply is not formally empowered to regulate the generators, Newbery noted that he has a general duty to promote competition.
