Southern Sudan borders Ethiopia on the east, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south, and the Central African Republic to the west.
Southern Sudan consists of the ten wilayats, or states, formerly part of the provinces of Equatoria (namely Bahr al Jabal, East Equatoria, and West Equatoria), Bahr el Ghazal ( North Bahr al Ghazal, West Bahr al Ghazal, and Lakes), and Upper Nile ( Junqali, Wahdah, and Upper Nile).
To the north lies the predominantly Arab and Muslim region directly under the control of the central government.

The Mundari tribe is one of the seven Bari-speaking tribes of central Equatoria.
The Mundari country borders Bor district in Upper Nile Province to the north, Yirol (Jieng-Aliab) district in Lakes Province to the northwest, Juba district to the south, Rokon district in Eastern Equatoria Province to the southwest, and Mundri district in Western Equatoria to the west, and Torit district to the east.
The mutiny by the Equatoria Corps in Torit, which sparked the longest civil war ever fought in history, erupted in August 1955, three months after Daniel's consecration.

Like their colleagues in the rest of Equatoria, the Zande community had played a central role in the agitations to divide up the South, a role for which, as we shall see later, a lot of people from Dinka circles, were to hold against the Zande to this day.
The regime therefore quickly sided with the agitations in Equatoria finally ending in the abrogation of the Addis Ababa Agreement in 1983, the split of the South into its previous constituent provinces of Equatoria, Bahr el Ghazal and Upper Nile, and the imposition of Islamic sharia.

 SPLA Offensive Overwhelms Muslim Forces
The fall of Kajokeji on 24 March brought to 19 the number of GOS garrisons captured by the SPLA in Central Equatoria since 9 March.
To compensate for their crushing losses in Equatoria, The GOS mobilised a massive mechanised column in the Upper Nile to capture Maban and Shali on 15 March.
The SPLA's dramatic new offensive has, therefore, broken the stranglehold of the NIF blockade on Western Equatoria and opened the road for relief supplies to be driven through Uganda into Western Equatoria.

It extends from dry, sandy desert in the north and north central regions through the thorny low trees of the low rainfall savannah in the central belt, to the broadleaf high rainfall savannah and lofty closed canopy tropical forests in the southern parts of the central belt and in the south.
Both species spread naturally in the central belt of the low rainfall savannah where they exist in pure or mixed stands, in the clay plains in the East and sandy soils in the West.

Interestingly, when the SPLA had initially captured Maban two months previously, the GOS radio had informed the public that no such garrison post existed and Maban was merely the name of one of the small tribes living in the Upper Nile.

This chronic state of insurgency against the central government was suspended early in 1972 after the signing of the Addis Ababa accords granting southern Sudan wide regional autonomy on internal matters, but a 1983 decree by President Nimeiri dividing the south into three regions revived southern opposition and militant insurgency.
Although the southern states are 'officially' exempt from these Islamic prohibitions and penalties, the 1991 act provides for a possible future application of Islamic law (Shari'a) in the south.
