 European Theater of Operations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Theater of Operations, or ETO, is the term used in the United States to refer to US operations north of the Mediterranean coast, in the European Theater of World War II.
From February 1944 the operational command was the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) which as an Allied command also had operational control of British and all other allied land forces and tactical airforces in the European theatre.
The term "theater of operations" was defined in the [American] field manuals as "the land and sea areas to be invaded or defended, including areas necessary for administrative activities incident to the military operations" (chart 12).

The soldiers with the lowest number of points were being reassigned to other military units all over Europe while those soldiers with the larger number of points were sent back to the States for separation from the service.

During the fall of 1942 the Eighth Air Force prepared the Twelfth Air Force for the invasion of Africa, and it was not until the beginning of 1943 that U.S. bombers began to attack Europe from England in large-scale raids.
Some of the most difficult operations of the war in western Europe occurred during the Rhineland Campaign as battles were fought in the Arnhem area, the Schelde estuary, the Huertgen Forest, the Aachen sector, the Metz and Saar regions, and the Belfort and Saverne Gaps.
The Central Europe Campaign began on 22 March 1945 with units of the First U.S. Army accross the Rhine in the Remagen area.

Under Hitler, Germany began re-asserting itself in Europe, clandestinely remilitarising in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles.
It was the first major defeat of the German army, and they never regained their momentum, allowing the Russian armies to eventually push the Germans all the way back to Berlin.
Germany's power was broken by the disastrous Russian campaign, while the ultimately successful invasion of France from the Normandy beachheads by the Western allies on June 6, 1944 opened up a third front.

It is March 26, 1945 and the entire division, infantry, artillery, engineers, with our attached tank, tank destroyer, and anti-aircraft battalions, have now crossed the Rhine River and moved some six miles into the front lines.
