The establishment of the SAAF was greatly facilitated by the extremely generous decision by the Imperial Government in 1919 to allocate to the Union some 100 aeroplanes from its war stocks, complete with spared and equipment.
The unit was renamed the SAAF Regiment on 1 August 1943, its task being the defence of airfields and the capture of enemy aerodromes.
The Central Flying School at Dunnottar was moved to AFB Langebaanweg and Renamed Central Flying School Langebaanweg in 1993.

Originally based at Dunnoter, the Central Flying School moved to Langebaanweg in December 1992, with 80 ANS moving in after the closing of AFB Ysterplaat Detached at Cape Town IAP during 2003.
The SAAF commenced vacating the base in 1999, with the intention of leaving only the SAAF Museum behind and thus the base is now known as 'Swartkop', an extension of AFB Waterkloof.
On the 1 July 1950 the Air Wing became the Independent Air Administration and Staff School and on the 7 December 1951 it was renamed as the SA Air Force College.

The name 85 Combat Flying School was given to the Unit in 1982.
Due to the demands on the existing Impala and Mirage flights, ministerial approval was granted to establish a new flying school that would take over the role of the Mirage Flight.
On 1 July 1986, 89 Combat Flying School was established and 85 Combat Flying School became solely responsible for all Impala combat training in the SAAF.

Towards the end of the 1980s, the Roulettes flying hours had to be reduced as the RAAF MB-326 fleet developed premature metal fatigue problems and a replacement aircraft type was investigated.

When I stopped flying the aircraft it had only 16,000 hours total time and was in superb condition, however the Memphis Belle decals (which I personally fitted under threat of being sacked if I refused) were not my idea.
The aircraft was used in a South African TV commercial for Volkskaas bank which I did all the flying for.
