 North American Migration Flyways
The Atlantic Flyway may be described as extending from the offshore waters of the Atlantic Coast west to the Allegheny Mountains where, curving northwestward across northern West Virginia and northeastern Ohio, it continues in that direction across the prairie provinces of Canada and the Northwest Territories to the Arctic Coast of Alaska.
The Central Flyway is relatively simple, as the majority of the birds that use it make direct north and south journeys from breeding grounds in the North to winter quarters in the South.
The southward route of migratory land birds of the Pacific Flyway that in winter leave the United States extends through the interior of California to the mouth of the Colorado River and on to the winter quarters that are principally in western Mexico.

Central Flyway Council Surveys to Manage Migratory Birds
Charles D. Evans reported in Flyways (see References) that his first plane to use on breeding duck surveys in Saskatchewan in 1954 was a "mouse-ridden, cattle-chewed Piper Super Cub" delivered by John Lynch, himself a pioneer waterfowl researcher.
In addition, the length of the central tail feather of Canada geese is obtained to place it in the "large" or "small" category, which provides a pointer to the race of the bird and ultimately to which population it came from.
State and federal biologists from all ten Central Flyway states spend a portion of their mornings between 20 May and 5 June counting doves on 200 fixed routes in the Central Flyway as part of the national Mourning Dove Call-count Survey.

In contrast, the Central Valley is an importantmigrational corridor for shorebirds in spring (Table 3).

In the Central Region, the daily success index in 1999 was unchanged from the 1998 index (2.1 woodcock per successful hunt) but the seasonal success index decreased 11 percent from 11.3 to 10.0 woodcock per successful hunter.
In the Central Region, the bag limit was reduced from five to three birds, season length was reduced from 65 to 45 days, and the framework opening date was changed to the Saturday nearest September 22 (rather than September 1).

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge is located in south central Kansas near the town of Stafford.
Its proximity to the Central Flyway migration route and the salt marshes on the refuge combine to endow the refuge with a large variety of birds.
Many of these birds are uncommon in other parts of Kansas or even the central part of the continent.

Mississippi Flyway :: Starry Transit :: An Installation by Martha Glowacki
The eastern boundary of the flyway is fairly distinct, running through the peninsula of southern Ontario to western Lake Erie, then southwestward across Ohio and Indiana to the Mississippi River where it follows the river to the Gulf of Mexico.
The entire flyway is uninterrupted by mountains or significant ridges, and timber and water are plentiful, making it a significant route for large numbers of songbirds, ducks, geese, and shorebirds.
On the eastern edge of the Mississippi Flyway, on bluffs that line the borders of Wisconsin, southern Minnesota, and northern Iowa, ancient effigy mounds in shapes of birds emerge from the hilly landscape.

The Flyway comprises several important migration routes of waterbirds, most of which extend from the northernmost breeding grounds in Russia (Siberia) to the southernmost non-breeding (wintering) grounds in West and South Asia, the Maldives and the British Indian Ocean Territory.
A “flyway” is the total area used by populations or species of birds, throughout their annual cycle, including the breeding areas, migration stop-over and non-breeding (wintering) sites.
This continental flyway comprises extensive large semi-arid habitats with a limited number of wetlands, particularly in the staging areas and different groups of migratory waterbirds appear to overlap considerably in the usage of important sites.

The Central Flyway believes a regulation such as this helps achieve a goal of regulations that maintain opportunity for abundant species, limit harvest of other species, are less burdensome to hunters, and are reasonably enforceable.
The information for flyway consideration will include proposed cuts, the dates of those activities, DMBM’s prioritization of the cut activities, activities that are not proposed for cuts, and goals/objectives of each activity.

MAHA Mississippi Flyway Duck Hunting Wetlands & Blinds
The Central and Mississippi flyway converge in the central mid-west due to the Mississippi River converging with the Ohio and the Missouri Rivers.
Unlike the coastal flyways that are clearly bound by the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans and Appalachian or Rocky Mountain chains the two interior flyways share a common boundary assigned by man rather than natural geographically limiting obstacle.
The interior flyways also contrast the ocean flyways and that the waterfowl migration movement is motivated by the region's major rivers rather than the more linear north-south coastal and mountain lines.

From the FWS management system our best Missouri Waterfowl hunting is under the Mississippi Flyway with the line dividing the Mississippi Flyway from that of the Central Flyway being an arbitrary manmade, on Missouri's west state line, rather than based on waterfowl migration influencing geography.
Most hunters will agree that the greatest majority of the Missouri River watershed is in the central flyway and it is the largest of all the watersheds in the United States making for much of the better waterfowl hunting to be found.
What is ignored by the Mississippi and central flyway dividing line is that the Missouri River watershed transcends this line bringing with it the migration following the river from the north central flyway into the lower Missouri River basin.

The central Platte River Valley in Nebraska is an internationally significant staging area for migratory water birds of the Central Flyway and is best known for the one-half million sandhill cranes and the several million other waterfowl that migrate annually through the valley.
Of central concern is how the ecosystem has adjusted to changes in streamflow.
Developing successful strategies to sustain or rehabilitate the riparian ecosystem of the central Platte River requires an understanding of the linkages between hydrology, river morphology, biological communities, and ecosystem processes.
