Pit vipers occur in North, Central, and South America and also range from Eastern Europe across Asia to Japan and the Indonesian archipelago.
In the tropics vipers may breed every year, but species inhabiting colder regions (such as the northern United States, Canada, and Europe) and at least one species from the highland tropics are unable to acquire sufficient food reserves to produce young annually.
Most vipers are heavy bodied and terrestrial; however, some have become adapted to life in the trees and are bright green with prehensile tails (Bothrops, Trimeresurus, and Atheris).
