The Central New England Railway was purchased in 1904 by the N Y, N H & H. It was operated as a separate entity until formally merged in to the New Haven on June 1, 1927.
The New York and New England RR from Willimantic was opened to Hartford in 1849 and to Waterbury in 1854.
At Canaan, the Central New England Railway crossed the Housatonic Railroad.

The elaborately carved chair of the lieutenant-governor in the senate chamber, made of wood from the historic Charter Oak, and the original charter of 1662 (or its duplicate of the same date) are preserved in a special vault in the Connecticut state library.
A new state library and supreme court building and a new state armoury and arsenal, both of granite, have been (1910) erected upon lands recently added to the Capitol Grounds, thus forming a group of state buildings with the Capitol as the centre.
During the 18th century Hartford enjoyed a large and lucrative commerce, but the railway development of the 19th century centralized commerce in New York and Boston, and consequently the principal source of the city's wealth has come to be manufacturing and insurance.

The Central New England Railway (AAR reporting mark CNE) was a railroad from Hartford, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts west across northern Connecticut and across the Hudson River on the Poughkeepsie Bridge to Maybrook, New York.
It was part of the Poughkeepsie Bridge Route, an alliance between railroads for a passenger route from Washington to Boston, and was acquired by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1904.
The Newburg, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad and Poughkeepsie and Eastern Railway, acquired by the NYNHandH in 1905 and 1907, were both assigned to the CNE and merged into it June 25, 1907 (along with the Dutchess County Railroad).

He invested a great deal of his energy in collecting materials relating to the history of the Central New England Railway (CNE), which was at that time no longer in operation.
The CNE merged with the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1927.
A majority of the images are of steam locomotives from various New England railroads, although the Central New England Railway steam locomotives are the most heavily represented.

Until the mid 1920s, the Central New England was operated semi-independently of the New Haven and the portion from Danbury to Maybrook and Campbell Hall was a very busy freight route, forming the New Haven's most important connection to and from the west.
By then Penn Central was in control of the whole New Haven property, and despite statements to the contrary at the time, it had no interest in reopening the Maybrook line.

The Poughkeepsie and Eastern Railway was the first railroad to run east from Poughkeepsie, New York, and was taken over by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and assigned to the Central New England Railway in 1907.
The line opened from the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad at Poughkeepsie to Stissing on the DandC on January 24, 1871, and on October 1, 1872 from Pine Plains to the state line, using trackage rights over the DandC between Stissing and Pine Plains.
The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad bought it in 1907 and on June 25 merged it into the Central New England Railway.

The DRM is now a member of the Tourist Railway Association, INc. (You may have noticed its logo, TRAIN with a vertical semaphore blade substituted for the "I".) The organization has about 350 members who are all in much the same kind of rail-related activities such as historic preservation or passenger train operation.
The New Haven had a few, and one in New Haven colors is currently owned by A. Beliveau and located in Middletown.
The CNE owned, controlled, or operated all lines in New York State (except those to New York City) that eventually became part of the the New Haven Railroad System, including the Maybrook Line from Danbury to the west.

The Hudson Connecting Railroad (inc. 1887, from Campbell Hall Junction to the Poughkeepsie Bridge) and the Poughkeepsie and Connecticut Railroad (Poughkeepsie Bridge to Silvernails) merged on July 22, 1889 to form the Central New England and Western Railroad.
It was sold under foreclosure on October 6, 1898, and reorganized as the Central New England Railway on January 12, 1899.
