This usage is mainly limited to residents of the provinces Otago and Southland, however.

Central Otago has an excellent network of secondary schools as well as the Cromwell Campus of the Otago Polytechnic.

DUNEDIN 14/05/2003 - New Zealand's fastest-growing wine region - Central Otago - is tackling a shortages of rural workers by building $12 million worth of apartments for pickers to stay in during the harvest.
Central Otago's 2003 wine harvest has jumped 25 percent this year to about 2000 tonnes of grapes, including high-priced 'Pinot Noir'; and 'Pinot Gris' grapes.
Central Otago growers have reported good quality harvests across the wine growing areas in Gibbston, Wanaka, Alexandra and the Cromwell-Bannockburn district.

A deed to establish the Central Lakes Employment Trust is now moving through the legal process and the planned start-up date is July 1.
Central Otago people will be encouraged to pick up the work, but the trust will also be recruiting throughout the rest of New Zealand and may even contract out other regions to train workers before they come to Central Otago.
