Originally a backwater of fishing villages, quarries and dockyards, the Eastern District is now mostly residential, with some industrial areas and several large shopping malls, and is densely populated.
In the past the district was linked by a single King's Road, which was notoriously congested during peak hours, this had largely been solved by the constructions of the Island Eastern Corridor, and the Island Line within the MTR subway system in the 1980s.

District councillors slammed the Drainage Services Department yesterday for delays in building a rainstorm water pumping station in Sheung Wan to prevent water logging in the area.
Several Central and Western district councillors said the pumping station was urgently needed to relieve the people of of the more-than-40-year-old flooding problem.
"The department had carried out work to improve the districts sewer system and clear the drainage pipes before last week's rainstorm, and decided to postpone the construction of the proposed station after consulting the district's councillors and concerned groups," said the department's senior engineer Tam Kit-fan.
