Central heating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Central heating is a common method of providing warmth to the whole interior of a building, or portion of a building, from one point to multiple rooms.
The most common heat source is through combustion of fossil fuel in a furnace or boiler.
In this case, the heated water in a sealed system is allowed to flow through a heat exchanger in a hot water tank or hot water cylinder where water from the normal water supply is heated by it before being fed to hot water outlets in the house.

Romans in Britain - Central Heating - Hypocaust
To most people, their knowledge of the Romans was that they 'invented central heating.' Not the type we know today, but a form of underfloor heating that also warmed the walls.
The danger from such a method of heating was not only from the materials in their homes, but also from the smoke that could become trapped and suffocate the dwellers through smoke inhalation.
The furnace was the heating source of the system and this was placed on the outside of the house, below the floor that ran under the room that was to be the hottest room in the house.

 ACM: Central Heating
Central Heating systems are typically a complete mixture of different metal types, including copper, aluminium, mild steel, brass and cast iron.
Customers who develop corrosion inhibitors for central heating systems are best served with an instrument such as the single channel Gill AC or the multiple channel Gill 12 fitted with the AC and DC Weld Test Option.
An important consideration, as in some areas of the central heating system, for instance in the middle of a mild steel radiator connected by plastic pipes, the steel is likely to corrode as if it isolated but still in contact with ions emitted by the other corroding elements.

 central heating
Central heating has its origins in the hypocaust heating system introduced by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago.
From the 18th century, steam central heating, usually by pipe, was available in the West and installed in individual houses on an ad hoc basis.
Central heating systems are usually switched on and off by a time switch.

Seattle City Light Conservation | Home Heating | Central Heating
A central heating system has three parts: 1) a device that creates heat (furnace, boiler, or heat pump), 2) a means of moving the heat from the source to all the rooms in the house and 3) something to control the whole system.
The heat mover we call a distribution system, which is usually comprised of ducts through which warm air moves or pipes through which hot water moves.
If your home has a heat pump the amount of heat it puts into the distribution system includes both the heat it pumps from outside your house to inside and the heat contained in the electricity used to run the heat pump.

 Central Heating FAQ
Q: I have been told that the case gasket has failed, and a spare cannot be obtained, and it is leaking fumes and carbon monoxide.
A: With regards to kettling, banging or popping noises in the central heating boiler, this is usually caused by either lime scale and corrosion debris becoming baked onto the inside surfaces of the heat exchanger, leading to localised boiling (due to hot-spots).
Provided that the heat exchanger is not too scaled up, or damaged, then by following the procedure below, may restore it back to normal, for a few years more.

Your heating system is not as you describe, first of all the stat on the boiler has no effect on the temperature of your hot water.
Hence when the boiler overrun circuitry kicks in to cool down the water in the heat exchanger, there is no where for the water to flow, unless a bypass circuit has been fitted.
