  New Georgia Encyclopedia: William Washington Gordon (1796-1842)
He was also the first president of the Central Railroad and Banking Company (later the Central of Georgia Railway), the corporation that constructed the first rail line connecting the port of Savannah with the cotton-growing interior of the state.
In 1833 Gordon was elected an alderman and served until 1836; he also won election to the Georgia legislature, first as a representative in 1835 and then as a senator in 1838.
In 1883 a magnificent cenotaph, constructed in Savannah's Wright Square by the Central of Georgia Railway, was dedicated as a memorial to Gordon, the company's first president and longtime leader.

 The Illinois Central Railroad
The Illinois Central is the only major rail carrier in the United States still operating essentially under its own name without interruption after nearly a century-and -a-half since its founding.
The Illinois Central Railroad was chartered in 1851 to build a railroad from Cairo, Illinois, at the joining of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, to Galena, in the extreme northwestern corner of the state (the "Old Main"), with a branch from Centralia (named for the railroad) to Chicago (the "Chicago Branch").
The NOJandGN and Mississippi Central were then reorganized in 1877 as the New Orleans, Jackson and Northern and the Central Mississippi, respectively, and then consolidated as the Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans Railroad, a subsidiary of the IC.

The Court in Central of Georgia Railway noted that section 2 of the Act controlled the "territorial jurisdiction" of the Bessemer Division.
Because the cause of action in Central of Georgia Railway did not arise in the territorial boundaries of the Bessemer Division, the Court held that the defendants were entitled to have the case transferred to the Birmingham Division.

 Irwinton Georgia's Short Line Railroad
5 the railroad was to "run from a point at or near the railway station on the Central of Georgia Railway Company called McIntyre, in a southwesterly direction to within the corporate limits of the town of Irwinton, at a point to be located in the public street near the Court House Square.
The consent of the corporate authorities having been obtained to enter said town, and to pass across, through and over the public square and streets of the same." The amount of capital stock was $15,000.
The railway was to run south into Laurens County and haul all cotton and timber from the area as well as haul in supplies.

One of my earliest memories is a trip to Chattanooga in which we went to the yards and he got me a ride in a switch engine.
Now, many years later, I have begun to collect information related to the Central of Georgia, partly for historical and family interest, but also to make a prototypically reasonable HO-scale model train layout (probably 1958-1962 timeframe).
The table is a little difficult to read because of its size, so I plan on writing a Java applet to limit it to the information you're looking for while making the entire table available for download as a CSV or Excel file.

The Central of Georgia Railway operated two classes of "Pacifics" for over 40 years.
After the Central of Georgia came under the control of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1909, tracks and bridges were strengthened which made it possible for the railroad to use heavier locomotives.

By the end of 1865, the South Western Railroad Company of Georgia had constructed a railroad bridge across the Chattahoochee to Eufaula, and by the time the Vicksburg and Brunswick Depot was built in 1872, three rail lines connected the city with other parts of Alabama and Georgia.
Chartered in 1867, the Vicksburg and Brunswick built the rail line from Eufaula to Clayton, and by 1888 the trains were running as far as Ozark.
The 2006 Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society Board of Directors Meeting was held on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Norcross Station Café, Norcross Georgia.

This 85-foot, 56-seat car was built by American Car and Foundry in 1947 for the Central of Georgia Railway, the same year that the railway ordered coaches 664 and 665.
Coach 663 was built for general service on the Central of Geogia, but was later painted in Illinois Central brown and orange for service on the "City of Miami" between Chicago and Miami.
Coach 663 was subsequently sold to the Algoma Central in 1973 as their number 440.
