Gene frequency comparisons between sunfish (Centrarchidae) populations at various stages of evolutionary divergence.
Nonetheless, mean levels of genetic divergence between centrarchid taxa are similar to those other animal taxa of corresponding rank characterized by different mode of reproductive isolation.
Amounts and patterns of genetic divergence are employed to infer probably evolutionary relationships among the Centrarchidae.

 DNR - Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus
The sunfish family, or Centrarchidae, includes such popular panfish as bluegills, rock bass and large and smallmouth bass.
The members of this family resemble the perch and sea bass families, but they differ in that the sinous and soft portions of the dorsal fin are united and confluent.
The large mouth bass is an exception, with a deep notch between the front and rear parts of the dorsal fin.

 Centrarchid Project, Mayden Lab
Our proposed research is the first comprehensive examination of the molecular systematics of the Centrarchidae, as well as outgroups representing potential sister-taxa, thus providing a more stable phylogenetic hypothesis than previously proposed and the necessary historical framework to reinterpret the many behavioral, biogeographic, ecological, evolutionary and developmental patterns documented by other disciplines.
Phylogenetic relationships of the genera of North American sunfishes and basses (Percoidei: Centrarchidae) as evidenced by the mitochondrial Cytochrome b gene.
This paper established the monophyly of the family and sister group relationships among the genera, as well as provided significant tests as to the monophyly of the genera and previous hypotheses of their relationships.

Body condition and stomach contents of fish inhabiting thermally altered areas
Body condition and stomach contents in three species of sunfish (Centrarchidae) were compared in natural and thermally influenced streams in South Carolina.
The objective of this study was to compare differences in body condition and stomach contents of fish in stream areas which are variously affected by heated effluent.
Three species of sunfish (Centrarchidae) were used in this study: spotted sunfish (Lepomis punctatus), redbreast sunfish (L.

We are currently making available three of our current hypotheses of relationships within the Centrarchidae.
As you know, the pygmy sunfishes of the genus Elassoma have been historically placed in the family Centrarchidae or their own family Elassomatidae.
Why our phylogenetic reconstruction did not identify Elassomatidae as being closely related to other Smegmamorpha in the analysis or the Family Centrarchidae, our shortest three is not significantly different from one wherein the Elassomatidae is sister to Centrarchidae.
