The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to explain its stand by Wednesday whether it could provide funds to about 1,700 fast track courts (FTCs) across the country to function beyond March 31 following non-allocation of funds by the 12th Finance Commission for their continuance from April 1.
The courts had disposed of 6.54 lakh cases and since they were doing good work there was no reason why they should not be continued.
Vahanvati that if the Centre did not provide funds, most of the States would not be in a position to fund the courts and might even discontinue them.

New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that of the 497 VVIPs occupying government accommodation unauthorisedly, 246 had been evicted/vacated after the court strongly indicted them for overstaying in the allotted houses.
On Tuesday the Centre filed a fresh affidavit stating that 246 occupants had been removed and 27 regularised.
The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were responsible for providing accommodation to these MPs and both the Secretary Generals had been asked to provide accommodation immediately to their Members from the surplus residential units available with the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha house committees.
