Topic: Centre for Civil Society

  What is civil society?
Civil society is a concept located strategically at the cross-section of important strands of intellectual developments in the social sciences.
Civil societies are often populated by organisations such as registered charities, development non-governmental organisations, community groups, women's organisations, faith-based organisations, professional associations, trades unions, self-help groups, social movements, business associations, coalitions and advocacy group.
Not surprisingly, 'society' was pushed to the sidelines and ultimately became a very abstract notion, relegated to the confines of sociological theorising and social philosophy, not fitting the two-sector world view that has dominated the social sciences for the last fifty years.

While civil society is a somewhat contested concept, definitions typically vary in the emphasis they put on some characteristics of civil society over others; some definitions primarily focus on aspects of state power, politics and individual freedom, and others more on economic functions and notions of social capital and cohesion.
Civil society is primarily about the role of both the state and the market relative to that of citizens and the society they constitute.
Civil society can be measured in various ways and at different levels: as separate units, each with specific characteristics, measures and data; or as a composite entity that combines individual components.

Hegel has a great deal to say about civil society, not all of which is easily understandable, but one of the most important points for the further development of the concept is that he saw civil society as something separate from, although symbiotic with, the state.
Civil society for Hegel meant men trading and interacting socially, but it was separate from government and law.
Whether civil society is a 'good thing', and how this can be demonstrated to be the case, will be one of the most interesting debates in the social sciences in the coming years.
