Topic: Centre of gravity

Center of mass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the case of a loose distribution of masses in free space, such as shot from a shotgun, the position of the center of mass is a point in space among them that may not correspond to the position of any individual mass.
The centre of mass of this figure is at a distance of 8.5 units from the left corner of the figure.
The center of mass is often called the center of gravity because any uniform gravitational field g acts on a system as if the mass M of the system were concentrated at the center of mass R.

Metacentric height - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The centre of buoyancy, is the centre of gravity of the volume of water which the hull displaces.
The distance between the centre of gravity and the metacentre is called the metacentric height, and is usually between one and two metres.
The righting force on the ship is then caused by gravity pulling down on the hull, effectively acting on its centre of gravity, and the buoyancy pushing the hull upwards; effectively acting along the vertical line passing through the centre of buoyancy and the metacentre above it.

The centre of gravity may be assessed by balancing the aircraft on two finger tips placed either side of the fuselage.

 PlanetMath: centre of mass
The term centre of gravity is sometimes used loosely as a synonym for the centre of mass, but these are distinct concepts; the centre of gravity is supposed to be a single point on which the force of gravity can be considered to act upon.
As shown by the above examples, the centre of mass and its related concepts have applications in mechanics and other areas of physics.
This is version 9 of centre of mass, born on 2005-08-15, modified 2005-08-31.

 Center of Gravity
The center of gravity of a collection of masses is the point where all the weight of the object can be considered to be concentrated.
The centre of gravity is not necessarily inside the object.
The center of gravity of an extended body or system of masses is also distinguished by the fact that it will remain at rest or moving at constant velocity unless the body is acted on by a net external force.

 Center of Gravity
The center of gravity is the average location of the weight of an object.
We can completely describe the motion of any object through space in terms of the translation of the center of gravity of the object from one place to another, and the rotation of the object about its center of gravity if it is free to rotate.
In general, determining the center of gravity (cg) is a complicated procedure because the mass (and weight) may not be uniformly distributed throughout the object.

Understanding Centre Of Gravity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The centre of gravity of an object is a point at or near the object through which the resultant weight of the object passes.
For a rectangle or square, the centre of gravity occurs at the centre of the section.
For a triangular section the centre of gravity occurs at a point 1/3 of the height from the base.

The centre of gravity (G) is the point at which the whole weight of the vessel can be said to act vertically downward.
The centre of gravity changes, depending on how weight is distributed in the vessel.
A vessel with a high centre of gravity is "top heavy." If it lists or heels to one side, the centre of gravity pushes down in the direction of the list.

 Quantum Gravity
Since the contemporary theory of gravity, general relativity, describes gravitation as the curvature of spacetime by matter and energy, a quantization of gravity implies some sort of quantization of spacetime itself.
Loop quantum gravity is less plagued by a lack of predictions, and indeed it is often claimed that the discreteness of area and volume are concrete predictions of the theory.
Indeed, it is a major challenge of loop quantum gravity to show that it has general relativity as a low-energy limit, and a major challenge of string theory to show that it has the standard model of particle physics plus general relativity as a low-energy limit.

I remembered (vaguely) from geometry that the triangle has a point called the centre of gravity, and realised that it had to lie on each of the lines between a vertex and the mid way point of the opposite side.
However, although this point is often described as a "Centre of Gravity", I can't find anything that shows it is a centre in the way I understand it, nor anything which explains that it isn't.
It's simple: the center of gravity of a 2-dimensional figure is NOT defined as a point such that any straight line through the point divides the figure into two regions of equal area.

However the gravity from 0.9 km mass will be G/0.9^2 and that from 1.1 km will be G/1.1^2 where G is a constant in both cases.
Second is the center of gravity, which is the point in an object or system of objects for which its response to a gravitational field can be treated as the motion of a point particle.

For one of the basic tenets of astronomy - the universal force of gravity - is now under serious challenge from a radical, competing theory which in the words of one observer threatens to "open Pandora's Box".
Dr HongSheng Zhao, of St Andrews, and his Belgian collaborator Dr Benoit Famaey believe that gravity actually changes depending on where it is in the universe, and have thrown down a challenge for their doubters to prove them wrong.
The further away something is from the source of the gravity, the less powerful it is. At the edges of the universe, the force is so weak it is known as "nano-gravity".

Posted - 6/7/2003 1:11:10 PM The problem with non-uniform gravity fields is that the CG of the object is a function of its position, so it's not a very useful concept.

In Ep 4 when the Falcon gets tractor beamed into the hangar it docks side on into the DeathStar which would make the "gravity-pull" from the top down to the bottom of the station.
But if the centre of the gravity-pull was in the middle of the Death Star this would mean that the Falcon docked front-end-on into the hanger (with the ass up in the air)which means when the occupants disembarked the ship they wouldve fallen inwards towards the centre of the station.
