  Centreboard - Definition, explanation
A centreboard is a form of movable keel on a small sailing boat or dinghy which can be moved to lower the draught (or depth) of the vessel.
A centreboard is a foil that converts lateral slipping of the boat into a lateral force that resists the slipping.
A retracting centreboard is more complex than a fixed keel, and most take up space inside the hull of the boat that could otherwise be used for passenger accommodations.

A centreboard is a retractable object of lateral resistance which pivots out of a slot in the hull of a sailboat, known as a centerboard trunk.
The pivoting ability allows the centreboard to be raised to operate in shallow waters, to reduce drag when the full area of the centreboard isn't needed, or to remove the boat from the water as on a trailer.
A centreboard is used to provide lift to counter the lateral force from the sails.

 Adding Centreboard Trunk Reinforcements
Gybing centerboards create a point load on the side of the centreboard trunk when the airfoil section starts to come into the centreboard trunk as the centreboard is raised.
This point load is applied to the centreboard trunk wall on an arc described by the point on the centreboard rotating around the CB pin as the board is raised.
The actual centreboard bolt hole has yet to be drilled and sealed; that is best done after fitting the new centreboard into the trunk to verify the appropriate location of the centreboard bolt hole.

Due to the configuration of the stem, which is above all adjusted to the use of a retractable centreboard, its competitive characteristics are not emphasized, especially for the conditions of the Adriatic sea.
Owing to the demand of the customer that it should be possible to pull the centreboard and the 200 kg bulb to the bottom of the stem, the underwater part of the stem is flat and relatively wide on the water line.
The deck and the cockpit are organized according to the principle “less is more”, so that the stress is put on sailing, not on steering and handling the boat and their systems.

The centreboard deserves a little chapter of its own: Since the boat is small and narrow and I am too old to appreciate falling into the water all the time the stability of the boat was a high priority.
To get the bulb to pass through the slot in the centreboard trunk this would have to be designed with a "adapter"-piece filling out the gap between the 3" wide opening in the centreboard trunk necessary for the bulb to pass and the 1" width of the actual centreboard.

Centreboard and rudder area both contribute to lateral resistance and so by altering the area of one foil only will change the position of "Centre of Lateral Resistance" CLR.
One thing I didn't mention is that the centreboard case is disproportionately longer than the distance it was moved forward (as if it were designed for a longer foil!), so I could, if absolutely necessary, move the centreboard aft (but not forward).

Centreboard: Bruce Farr designed the boat with a centreboard that was raked aft, and had the centre of effort aft as well.
As you go underneath the centreboard, the boat will flip, and suddenly you will find yourself lying on top of the board, with the mast downwind of you, your weight having stopped the boat's natural tendency to go right upside down again.
One owner has claimed an improvement on this technique: instead of slipping your body under the centreboard, he says that you should reach right down under the water and strongly grab the underwater gunwale, so that as the boat does the flip, you actually arrest it in the upright position, and save time.

The centreboard of the Roamer is a steel plate whereas that for my boat is a much thicker grp aerofoil the lower part of which is lead filled, hence it is heavier and has a lower centre of gravity.
This reduces load on the centreboard lifting cable and also reduces the contact loads between board and case when the boat is heeled.
Indeed, this centreboard is quicker and easier to raise while sailing than are most wooden ones since the winch easily overcomes the effect of weight or water pressure acting sideways on the board.

Centreboard casing jammed by sand or stone
to prevent centreboard jamming due to sand or stone.
Two years ago, the shore in front of our Wayfarer dinghy park at the Ho Bugt Sejlklub was damaged by a major storm, and the beach had to be built up with fresh sand that was especially sharp.
This moved the narrow point between centreboard and casing 50 – 60 mm's up into the casing, and resulted in no jamming, as we had often seen with a centreboard with the newer "cigar-nose-shaped" leading edge.
