Centrex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In effect, Centrex provides an emulation of a hardware PBX, by using special software programming at the telephone exchange, which can be customized to meet a particular customer's needs.
The Centrex customer is not restricted to using the features available to POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) customers, but can choose from a wide variety of special services and features.
A typical Customized Centrex setup will allow 4 digt dialing between "locals" (perhaps even if they are located in different parts of the city), customized routing through the telephone network (such as Least Cost Routing or Time of Day Routing), and customized codes for invoking features.

Centrex, of course, has its roots in the voice world, which has been ruled by the telcos for the past 125+ years.
Given the facts that traditional Centrex resides on a CO (Central Office) switch platform (i.e., a Class 5 switch) and that the resources (e.g., memory, processing power and traffic capacity) of such a CO are limited, Centrex features are a subset of those available on PBXs.
Centrex may not be particularly exciting (i.e., it's pretty boring) and it doesn't offer the latest and greatest feature content, but it's pretty painless and it fits the requirements of many end users.

centrex - a Whatis.com definition   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Centrex (central office exchange service) is a service from local telephone companies in the United States in which up-to-date phone facilities at the phone company's central (local) office are offered to business users so that they don't need to purchase their own facilities.
The customer is spared the expense of having to keep up with fast-moving technology changes (for example, having to continually update their private branch exchange infrastructure) and the phone company has a new set of services to sell.
In most cases, Centrex (which is sold by different names in different localities) provides customers with as much if not more control over the services they have than PBX did.

In the old days of conventional Centrex, one of the disadvantages was that the typical phone was a plain handset with only the normal numeric buttons - functions had to be accessed by combinations of button presses.
