Centrifugal type supercharger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The centrifugal type supercharger is practically identical in operation to a turbocharger, with the exception that instead of exhaust gases driving an impeller, there is only a compressor housing, and that is driven from the crankshaft via a belt-, gear- or chain-drive.
The Volkswagen G60 supercharger was invented by L.Creux circa 1905, the G in G60 standing for G-Lader (Lader being german for Charger), a supercharger whose interior resembles the letter "G".
All supercharger types benefit from the use of an intercooler to reduce heat produced during compression.

Twin-screw type supercharger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The twin-screw type supercharger is a positive displacement type device that operates by pulling air through a pair of meshing lobes not dissimilar to a set of worm gears.
Unlike the Roots type supercharger, however, the twin-screw exhibits internal compression.
Although not as ultimately efficient as the centrifugal type supercharger, it does not suffer from the latter's lack of low-rpm boost.

Centrifugal Superchargers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Centrifugal superchargers have similar characteristics to turbochargers, with poor boost at low rpm, and a power curve continually climbing up to maximum boost at redline.
A centrifugal supercharger is basically the same type of pump as the compressor side of a turbocharger, but is mechanically driven off the crankshaft instead of by exhaust gas.
Centrifugal superchargers are generally cooler than turbochargers, with adiabatic efficiencies in the 60-80% range (see our Supercharger Heat page for more about heating and cooling of forced induction systems).

Superchargers may absorb as much as a third of the total crankshaft power of the engine, and in many applications are less efficient than turbochargers.
The Roots type supercharger or Roots blower is a positive displacement type device that operates by pulling air through a pair of meshing lobes not dissimilar to a set of stretched gears.
The centrifugal type supercharger is practically identical in operation to a turbocharger, with the exception that instead of exhaust gases driving an impeller, there is only a compressor housing, and that is driven from the crankshaft via a drive belt.

 cars - Supercharger
A supercharger (sometimes called a blower), a positive displacement or centrifugal pump, is a gas compressor used to pump air into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine.
It is similar in purpose to the closely related turbocharger but differs in that the supercharger is powered by gearing, by belt- or by chain-drive from the engine's crankshaft while the turbocharger is powered by the mass-flow of exhaust gases driving a turbine.
As the war progressed two-speed superchargers were introduced using better controllers and, notably, hydraulic clutches, that allowed the boost to be managed over a wide range of altitudes by operating at low rpm down low and at high rpm at higher altitudes.

Supercharger   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A supercharger is a gas compressor used to pump a fuel / air mixture, the charge, into the cylinder s of an internal combustion engine.
It is similar in purpose to the closely related turbocharger, but differs in that the supercharger is powered by gearing (or belts) off the engine's crankshaft, while the turbocharger is powered by the pressure of exhaust gases driving a turbine.
Throughout WWII British superchargers generally had higher critical altitudes than their German counterparts, and when combined with higher octane fuels that allowed for higher boost levels, British engines were generally able to outperform German ones.

 The Basics Of Forced Induction
Centrifugal and screw-type blowers are considered internal compression superchargers, since the impellers in each compress air inside the unit itself, and then send the compressed air to the intake manifold.
The centrifugal supercharger compresses the air primarily at the point that the air leaves the impeller and is forced into the scroll; and from there through a venturi-shaped bore.
Although the centrifugal supercharger is founded on a technology much newer than either the Roots or the twin-screw, it was the first supercharger to be successfully applied to automotive applications.

When a centrifugal type compressor section is mated to a gas turbine drive it is then refered to as a turbo-supercharger, commonly called a turbocharger.
All of the types of compressors may be mated to and driven by either gas turbine or mechanical linkage.
Supercharging is not confined to superchargers — jet engines rely on supercharging as one of the main routes to thrust growth and improved fuel efficiency.

The supercharger pulley is usually spun by the engine's serpentine belt, although some superchargers use a dedicated second belt, a cog belt, or a chain.
Turbos are very similar to centrifugal superchargers in operation, but instead of being powered by a belt running off the crankshaft, a turbo derives it's power from a fan within the engine's exhaust system.
Superchargers, by their very nature as air compressors, generate a LOT of heat, and the air being forced through the intake pipes is typically as much as 75 degrees F hotter than ambient air.

All three types of blowers—Roots, centrifugal, and screw—can be adjusted to varying levels of boost (how much pressure they create), and a 50 percent increase in power is pretty typical.
Due to the centrifugal blower's radial configuration and smaller size, the power increase is not as immediate or intense (similar to the lag of its half-brother the turbo).
Centrifugal superchargers have the same "snail" or "hairdryer" look as their turbocharger relatives.

Centrifugal Supercharging compresses the air inside the case of the supercharger using an impeller.
This design is similar to turbo-charging except for centrifugal superchargers don't use the exhaust to build pressure, they use a belt, driven by the crank pulley to spin the impeller.
Centrifugal superchargers have become the standard for street use and light-duty racing and far outsell all other types of superchargers.

The positive displacement supercharger will move a fixed amount of air on each rotation and that is not dependant on impeller speed as it is on the centrifugal type.
It is said that the compression of the air occurs in the plenum after it leaves the supercharger in the modified roots type supercharger unlike the Lysholm where the air is compressed inside the blower and then decompresses as it leaves the blower and enters the plenum.

NASIOC - How a Turbo Charger works
A supercharger does about the same thing as a turbo, as far as jamming air into the combustion chambers, thus raising the compression ratio and building more hp.
A supercharger is less efficient because it causes a parasitic drag on the engine having to spin it via a belt and pulley system.
The centrifugal type supercharger is a little different, having an effective range higher in the RPMs if I understand correctly.

Offshoreonly.com - Centrifugals and Screws, CompRatio vs. Boost and Detonation?????
Regarding what would be a safe CR to run with a supercharger (SC), I’m thinking that much of that depends on the type of SC itself, i.e.
With a roots or screw type SC on a BBC at full load you will be seeing full boost, say 5-7 lbs (under load) at these peak torque rpms so you would want to make sure your compression ratio is compatible; somewhere around 7.5:1-8.5:1.
With a centrifugal type supercharger (ProCharger, Vortech, etc…), when at peak torque rpm under full load, you will only be seeing about 3-4 lbs of the max 5-7 lbs you will see at WOT rpm when cylinder pressures are less.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says a supercharger is: a device (as a blower or compressor) for pressurizing the cabin of an airplane or for increasing the volume air charge of an internal combustion engine over that which would normally be drawn in through the pumping action of the pistons.
Compared to the Vortech centrifugal supercharger and the HP Performance twin turbo system, those are some amazingly strong numbers at such a low RPM.
This supercharger and engine setup is absolutely magnificent on the road; it produces amazing torque numbers down low, where they count on the street.

*shroudedless turbine Modern practise is, where possible, to eliminate the rotor shroud, thus reducing the centrifugal load on the blade and the cooling requirements.
The exceptions being solar panels, fuel cells, and diesel generators which are commonly use in small isolated towns (this practice is very common in Alaska for instance).
Reciprocating engine Piston engines, especially for aircraft, can use a turbine powered by their exhaust to drive an intake-air compressor, a configuration known as a turbocharger (turbine supercharger) or, colloquially, a "turbo".

The ducting provided with the CDC Shaker can still be used with this shroud, but you will be required to cut a hole in the shroud, and you may have to shorten the length of the Shaker ducting depending on the overall size of the shroud.
A: The Shaker system can be adapted to most centrifugal-type supercharger kits currently available, but it will require modification of the Shaker Engine Cover as well as some fabrication of the air tube.
In these cases, the Shaker’s engine cover required trimming to fit around the new/relocated components, and custom ducting had to be fabricated to extend from the Shaker-providing ducting to the supercharger’s filter.
