USATODAY.com - Centrino aims to be more than a laptop flavor of the month   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Centrino represents the latest ingredients inside notebook computers cooked up by the master chefs at Intel along with its partners (a who's who among laptop makers and the likes of Boeing, Cisco, T-Mobile and McDonald's).
Centrino is already backed by a massive ad campaign, and chairman Andy Grove has proclaimed the Centrino second only to the Pentium in terms of importance to Intel.
The Centrino recipe goes beyond a single chip, though a new processor dubbed Pentium M, the first Intel processor designed with mobility in mind from the get-go, is a core component.

ITworld.com - Centrino-based Tablet PCs on the horizon
When Intel launched the Centrino platform on March 12, vendors rolled out a slew of new notebooks based on the platform, but Tablet PCs were largely left out of the picture.
However, there is good news for users who are looking for a Tablet PC that includes Centrino with the Pentium M, which Intel says offers longer battery life and higher performance, albeit at lower clock speeds, than the company's other mobile processors.
"Centrino matches really well with what many tablet users are looking for," said Jim O'Brien, senior analyst at IDC, pointing to the Pentium M's lower power consumption and the wireless LAN access afforded by the platform.

Centrino is a new strategic direction for Intel in several ways.
Along with the new Centrino brand comes a new logo, the usual Intel blue combined with magenta in the shape of an arrow, which Intel says is designed to convey "a feeling of speed, mobility, and streamlined technology".
It's also important to note that many institutions (including the University) are working hard on their 802.11b deployments and are not yet ready to consider 802.11a or 802.11g.

Centrino - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Centrino, a platform-marketing initiative from Intel, covers a particular combination of CPU, mainboard chipset and wireless network interface in the design of a laptop personal computer.
The Centrino marketing program has been widely assumed to be responsible for the success of Intel notebook PCs.
However, findings of the Japanese FTC in March of 2005indicate that the financial incentives associated with the Centrino program were used as illegal, anti-competitive practices by Intel to induce its customers not to buy notebook chips from Intel's long time rival AMD.

If your laptop's main function is to keep you in touch with the office from any airport lounge or conference hall, you'd probably prefer an energy-efficient processor that gives you an extra hour of battery life to one that can run your PowerPoint animations faster.
Centrino can be viewed as a case of good timing (Wi-Fi gained popularity just as Intel was looking for ways to make laptops and notebooks more useful) or as a brilliant encore to "Intel Inside." But executives say the project's real significance lies elsewhere.
So even though the three components of Centrino "were not conceived as a 'platform' from day one," says Eden, the idea of cobranding them took hold quickly.

Battery life might be slightly less than with the old Centrinos, but a brand new design platform will likely perform about the same, as DDR2 takes less power, and there are other features built into the chipset which will compensate for the higher frequencies, he reckoned.

Centrino is the chipmaker's brand name for a three-part package for mobile computers: the Pentium M processor, a supporting chipset and a wireless chip.
The reason for the change: With the release of the 2.6.8 Linux kernel, the open-source operating system's power management abilities now meet Intel's requirements for Centrino notebook battery life, said Karen Regis, manager of mobile programs and promotions at the chipmaker.
That's something of a turnaround for a company that took a year after the initial Centrino launch to release prototype Linux support for the wireless network chip.
