Leon Trotsky: Two Articles On Centrism (1934)
The centrist, never sure of his position and his methods, regards with detestation the revolutionary principle: State that which is; it inclines to substituting, in the place of political principles, personal combinations and petty organizational diplomacy.
The centrist always remains in spiritual dependence upon right groupings, is induced to court the goodwill of the most moderate, to keep silent about their opportunist faults and to regild their actions before the workers.
The centrist swears by the policy of the united front as he empties it of its revolutionary content and transforms it from a tactical method into a highest principle.

Centrism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is anecdotal evidence that some people, particularly in Western two-party democracies, especially in the United States, consider themselves "centrists" and consider the word a compliment; thus, people are rarely attacked for being "centrists." This leads to a recursive definition where a centrist is merely defined by other centrists as "someone who agrees with me".
In this case the number of centrists can not be determined except to say that there are far fewer centrists than people claiming to be centrists.
For instance, the Independent Labour Party was seen as revolutionarily centrist because they were a radical formation moving towards a revolutionary position and had the potential to become a full fledged revolutionary party or at least have a large number of their members move towards an openly revolutionary position.

 American Centrist Coalition
The main purpose of the AMERICAN CENTRIST COALITION is to educate the public in the philosophy of NET-CENTRISM as an alternative to the polar ideologies of the left and the right, and as an alternative to the vacuous and unprincipled non-ideology of pure centrism.
Centrists employ this strategy in order to avoid the controversies associated with more extreme positions, or in order to avoid the difficult reasoning process required to uncover the relevant facts about particular issues.
Moderates and pure centrists, as their labels suggest, tend to lack the ideological zeal which is so vital to the mobilization of the electorate and to the success of mass movements.

The Centrist plan also would exacerbate fiscal problems in the states; it would cause states and a few localities to lose nearly $4 billion in state and local tax revenue in the coming year, thereby necessitating nearly $4 billion in additional state budget cuts and tax increases.
Because it fails to include these provisions, the Centrist Coalition plan would fail to prevent many low-income parents who left welfare for work (or stayed off welfare to begin with) and have struggled to raise their children on low wages from being denied unemployment insurance benefits if they are laid off.
